Different types of fighters

I do not know whether anyone has given it any thought so far, but I would love to have a broader range of fighters in the game, such as:

fighter: classic, good at killing fighters and bombers
bombers: also classic, good at killing larger ships, but has to get in close
torpedo bombers: can attack from greater range and thus does not go so much into risk. torpedos highly damaging, if they hit, but can be intercepted.
interceptors: good at intercepting bombs, torpedos, missiles (even from cap ships, provided there are cap ships using missiles)
scouts maybe, they could be cloaked or something.
defenders: less range, bit slower, thus rather good at staying near the fleet and protecting large ships

the point is, there are a number of factors you can vary with fighters, such as attack distance or refuel time, agility and damage / type of damage, just let your imagination play, or even have a look at past and present reality. I would feel it would add to the game, so what are your opinions?

Perhaps different fighter types could become part of the tech tree? I wonder if that kind of thing is in the next beta.

I think bombers are already in the game, as are general Space Superiority fighters.

I would like to see interceptors if they aren't already implemented.

Torpedo bombers see way overpowered, maybe that should be mitigated by them being massively expensive and slow. Meaning you could have maybe one torpedo bomber to every squadron. Otherwise I can see them being extremely irritating, taking out tons of my ships before I can destroy them.

I think defenders maybe too much, too many cooks and all that, Space Superiority fighters can handle ship defence themselves.

I like the interceptor idea; only the usual fighters/bombers are in Beta 2.  I'm sure it's something Ironclad will look at.

I remember Blair said long ago (very long ago), that gunships was taken out, because of some balance issues.
Maybe the frigat gunship is taking its place?

But im all in for more kinds if fighters

I like the "Torpedo bombers" idea, they should be slow and needs to be protected.

I like the idea for torpedo bombers, but again it depends on the ability for incoming missiles to be shot down by ship weapons.

I don't really like the above stated role for interceptors. When I think of interceptors from reallife air forces, I think of large, fast, heavily armed fighters designed to quickly reach and destroy enemy bombers before they can launch their weapons. Being large, they tend to be less maneuverable than smaller general purpose fighters, and hence less capable in a close-up fighter dogfight.

There's nothing wrong with a class of fighters designed to take out incoming missiles and such, I just don't think that "interceptor" really says the right thing as a name.

Ahh, I was wondering about those gunship remnants in the files..

If Ironclad so desired, I'm sure a craft type would be a good way to put in a boarding mechanic.

good point, I too think of rather heavily armed fighters when I hear interceptors. I suppose someone could come up with a better name. what were those fast fighters called that you commanded a few missions in freespace 2 when you had to keep bombs from destroying a base? because that is where I got the idea from, looked a bit of what type of missions you had to perform there and what types of fighters were included and then thought what can be transfered to a strategy game.

one more possible type could be electronics fighters that carry either electronic bombs or according equipment and could hinder other ships functions. I is more likely something included for frigates and larger ships or an ability of a capships, but you could argue it for fighters because it needs proximity.

uh, yet even one more: a scanner fighter / ships. gives you an update on enemy ships' condition close by. needs to be balanced for how long they need to be in range and what kind of information you can derive from this, but it is an idea.

what you can maybe see is that my idea for differentiation among races also goes in different races using different ship classes for different specialist functions. one can use fighters for this recon thing, another a capship ability. helps making the races more distinct.
