new player questions

Hi,
I just started the game today. I researched trade and it says I need some other tech to build the freighter. Which tech is that?

Is there some simple way to find out which other techs are needed for a given ship/whatever?

If you researched Trade, you can build your own trade ship. Use cargo hull, put on it 2-4 life supports, fill the rest with engines (Ion engine preferably). Keep producing them (you'll need 8-12 of them) on a planet which will have lots of population, and send them to your neighbours' HWs to make relations with theme better. Send more than one only to the race you'd like to have as an ally.

BTW trade brings only a limited amount of money. The more planets are available for colonizing, the less the trade will be important for producing money.

If the tech tree screen doesn't tell you exactly what other techs you need to build new 'core' ships, you're most likely still running v1.0 right off the disc--you should update the game to the latest version (you'll then have the exact techs you need listed there).

Never build the core ships, always design your own ships using your latest tech, customized to your need. For example, you might build an expensive constructor with lots of engines and life support to claim a galactic resource before the AIs but then build it up with cheap constructors (just a constructor module) especially if you have the speed +2 race ability.
