Ship Research

New player, I am having trouble unlocking other core ship designs other than defender, despite having researched all the way to large hull design?

Presumably there are techs that I need but am not sure what they are, would appreciate some help here?

Don't use the core ships, simple as that. Designing your own is just much better.

If you really insist on using the core ships (and I have no idea why you would) then make sure you have all of the weapons/defenses/engines/whatever else are needed and try going up the miniturisation tree.

You need to research all the weapons that go on those ships, not just the hulls. All the hulls research unlocks is larger hulls for ships to use, whether it be core designs or your own.

Designing your own ships is much more useful, as you can create them to the purpose you need and for the galactic situation at hand.

Yup, never use the core ships for their weapons, defenses, engines, etc are not implemented base on the requirements of the particular game you're in.

as long as you reasearch good weapons, hulls, miniturization, and defenses. then if you make a big ship stacked with all of that it is better than the predesigned ones.

The tech tree screen tells you what additional techs yopu need to get a ship, even one you created in a previous game.

I THINK, if you click on an engine tech or a weapon tech it'll say the name of a ship and what other techs are needed and how many.

When I am not in the mood to build a whole ship from scratch, I usually dig through the ship templates and pick a template that fits the mood. I then add all weapons/shields/etc myself. I find that I am able to make considerably more powerful ships than what is available in the "core" screen.

The core ships are weak but cheap. One problem is they always have the same defense type as weapon type so aren't usually suited to the actual galactic military climate. Don't use the core ships.

Choosing a core template and putting your best stuff on it will make a much stronger ship without having to think of a design. If you have a good amount of miniaturisation you'll be able to fit more on as well. You're also able to tailor it to your advantage against an opponents weapons and defenses.

On a related note, isn't there a table or list for all of the core ships that tells you what's needed tech-wise and their stats? If there isn't there should be.
