What fleet characteristics affect combat?

Obviously weapon strength numbers and defense numbers play a part, but is there any other ship component that aids in combat? Such as... does a higher sensor rating give you "the drop" on your enemies so your shots hit first? Do faster ships avoid more damage? Does size matter?
