Treaties. Worth it?

I had a ball on my first game on easy, on a medium map. Now I've started a new game on a gigantic map. I've grabbed all the juicy worlds in my local cluster and now I'm starting to run into other races.

In my last game I never used treaties, so I want to know why every race would accept a treaty in return for all their ships and money and most of their influence points. Should I rip them all off now, or will it bite me in the ass later.

You can only give a treaty to once race, then it is in place permanently unless the recipient dies or goes to war with you (at which point you get it back to give to someone else). The treaties give the recipient a free bonus equal to 10% of your income or research.

I generally hold onto treaties until (will try to type this correctly) later on in the early-part-of-the-game.

Once I identify a race whom i think i will need good relations with, whether its cause I will want them as an ally, or I fear going to war with them....i use my treaties with them to obtain techs I need.
