AI ships!?

How can AI medium sized ships contain for example 11 attack, 5 defense, and be very fast. How do they have enough space for all these items. Looking at the technology they are not more advanced than me, yet I can only get about 1-2 attack, maybe 1 defense, and moderate speed.

are you playing DA or DL?

They could have better miniturisation techs coupled with racial bonuses.

In my DL games, i use 8 ability points on defence, hitpoints and weapons.... i do that and barely manage to keep up with the AI in game.
