A little thing I do

Over the several games I've played, I find that my troop transports zip by undefended star bases and troop transports. However, I can never blow them up. So, I started arming my troop transports with the most basic weapon possible (this is especially easy late game or with a robust economy/tech). When transports are running around with 15+ movement, I can zip in, kill 5000 undefended troops, and zip out, and very rarely do I have to divert my combat vessels (who move slower due to lots of weaponry) to chase the transports down. It's no Einstein strategy, and I'm not Wyndstar, but it's a little something I do that's cheap, easy and pays big dividends.

And I forgot to say, It's nice to take out a no weapons resource/economy starbase with this method too.

You're getting transports with 15+ movement? In Dark Avatar?

It does look like you can slap on a cheap size-7 laser for 25 bc, though. I've never done that. I have dedicated cargo hulls with 1 laser and lots of engines that do that.

I prefer to use dedicated cargo hulls for that. I load up a cargo hull full of engines, sensors and some life support and one lazer, then i zoom around and wreak havok around the place. They are supremely effective and as an added bonus they will pick up allot of 'chasers' taking enemy ships out of play.

hmm, I hadn't thought of using a dedicated ship solely for that purpose. I'll have to try that.

Wow, 15 movement for transports in DA? So you had all miniturization techs plus all engine techs plus numerous shrinkers? Or am I just paranoid at this point that I can never get fast ships in DA?

My last game had ships top out at 13.

The speed restriction effects human and AI alike, however the changes made to speed when you think about it, really only forces the AI to devote more space to engines. So it is no longer possible for you to outpace them so extremely.

I didn't think 15 was that good. Well, my race did have +2 to speed, but perhaps it's because I only use one advanced troop carrier per ship. i only put 1000 troops on each. Maybe that's why I can squeeze more juice out of 'em.

Totally off topic, but how do you get the "Racial Victory" medal?

After I posted, I realized how you got it, i.e. +2 to speed!

It's just from posting wins to the metaverse playing all the races. I actually played a couple I wouldn't have just to get it, because I thought it was the coolest looking of all of them!

ohh you win a game with each race and post it. ahh gotcha

I'm a bit confused by the comments about 15 speed being so remarkable in Dark Avatar. Yes, it usually takes quite a while to research the necessary tech, but I don't have a problem fielding speed 21-30 ships in the late game (1 base speed + 16 from 4 Hyperwarp engines + 3 from knowing Hyperwarp + 1 from Gravity Accelerators = 21, replace the 4 Hyperwarp engines with 5 Hyperwarp IIIs for 30 speed).

15 speed for a TRANSPORT is remarkable. You're blowing an awful lot of money into that transport that's going to just go away first thing you invade.

Good point, I rarely build transports of that speed either for that exact reason. I guess I was really replying to CornhuskerMac's comment about his ships of all types topping out at speed 13.

Ah, no, I was actually thinking of transports, without saying so. But those are the fastest ships I ever build. I just can't justify putting more engines than necessary when they're so *#&@ expensive. I almost always put only one engine on any warships, for instance, and almost never more than 2 on constructors.

And don't you put as many troop modules on your transports as you can, so long as you can get a decent speed? I'd always go for another troop module over engines any day.
