Ships (and other 3D models) no longer visible in game??

Ok, I'm assuming this is a setting that I've somehow managed to flip off, but for the life of me I can't seem to find it. Basically, I loaded the game up one day and suddenly all of my ships, planets, and starbases were only represented as icons, regardless of views. The suns were still present in 3D form though.

I've restarted the game, my computer, and uninstalled/reinstalled the game (though save games maintained, so I imagine some preferences did too). I'm on the newest DirectX and graphics drivers. I've got a 1.6 GHz WinXP Pro computer with 1 GB RAM. Nothing impressive, but it runs the game just fine, and no other glitches are present. Can anyone help me, pleeeeease???

Yep. Move the Tactical View Zoom Level slider back towards the middle. Maxing it out effectively sets it to always on.

Haha!!! That's it!! Thank you. Now that I understand what it means, that makes perfect sense. Hmm...not sure how to better name that slider. Perhaps a level of detail distance? I dunno. Thank you so much for the help - wish I had asked sooner.
