How do we know which mods will work with DA?

Some of the mods do note Dark Avatar or DA. Some,however, don't note this. How do we tell which mods will work with DA?
Also, there is a "dark Lord" mod which allows us to play as Dark Lords. Does this work with DA? If so, how do I install it. I have added it to the mod file, the data file and still no effect.
