Please help a relative newbie

I had a couple of questions for you veteran players.

1. If I just buy GC II Dark AVatar, will it work on my laptop without Dread Lords installed?

2. I don't understand mining. I think that we can only increae the mining level by researching new mining tech, right?

3. What is the benefit of mining?

4. I seem to be able to assign some benefits. How does this work and when would I want to assign anything?

DL is required in order to download and play DA.

When you research a new level of mining tech, you can then have your mining ships go and upgrade any existing mining bases you have on asteroids. The asteroids provide a (free) manufacturing bonus to the planet of your choice.

4. I seem to be able to assign some benefits. How does this work and when would I want to assign anything?


You can direct the output of an asteroid mining base to the planet of your choice, though the amount of manufacturing you get from it decreases teh further away that planet is. But even at the bare minimum, asteroids can be used to accelerate construction, or push it just enough to build something a turn sooner in a pinch, for just one example.
