Earth Day

With palms together,
Good Morning All,

It is Earth Day today. For me this is always a special day since I enjoy this planet so much and wish it well. It is our home. And we should honor it, take good care of it, and protect is as best we can.

In an odd sort of way, one of the reasons I am so uncomfortable with the notion that a sanctuary is sacred is that such a concept divides the world into spots. Some spots we treat with reverence, others we trash. What is up with that?! Is not this entire world a product of an unfolding, never-ending, constantly and spectacularly evolving creation? Some might say it is God's creation, others might say not. It really doesn't matter in the end as it is our only home and regardless of how it came to be here it is suffering now.

The space of the earth is finite. Its ability to process waste is finite. We are consumers extraordinaire, always pushing the limits of the trash piles and garbage barges. Regardless of what you think of global warming, a vast conspiracy or a dire warning or something in between, the very fact that we so easily consume, waste, and trash our home should be enough to get us off our asses and into action.

Its expensive to consume. Its expensive not to recycle, re-use, and be wasteful with non-renewable resources.

So, today lets consider even for a moment what our consumption habits are and how we might save a little money here and there, and as a result, make our home a bit more beautiful.

Tips:

Change over to florescent spiral light bulbs as your present bulbs expire. These are a bit more pricey on the front end, but can last seven years and require 2/3rds less power.

Use cloth towels in the kitchen rather than paper. I am working on this one myself.

Cook more unprocessed and pre-packaged foods. They are less expensive, healthier, and produce WAY less trash.

Plant things: flowers, green plants, vegetables if possible.

Sit outside today. If in a chair, place your bare feet on the ground and feel the earth. We don't often do this and yet, we really need to stay in touch with our real home. Better, lay down on the ground. Let the planet support your body and feel its strength and willingness to do so.

In the process we will let the earth and ourselves Be well.
