Help Free BBC Reporter Alan Johnston

On or around the 11th of March this year Alan Johnston, the only permanent reporter to be stationed in Gaza in the Middle East was abducted by Palestinstian millitants and has not been seen since.
This is seen by all to be a direct attack on freedom of speach and on the right to report in an honest and objective way on the problems and tribulations of the everyday people of the Gaza strip and has shocked and saddened both the general population of Gaza and the international community alike.
There have been protests and vigils organized worldwide to call for his release but as yet to no avail.
Hope is not lost and more than 40 thousand people have already signed a petition for Alan's realease.
If you wish ,you may do so aswell. All support is greatly appreciated,Thankyou.

Details of how to do so can be found here : WWW Link

I've got no problem signing the petition (I have done so), but I fail to see in the link anything about who the petition is trying to influence or what influence 49,000 signatures from around the world has.

Enlightenment is requested.

Petitioning a formal government that is elected or appointed has some value if those in power can be affected by the future voting of the petitioners but this?  Please help a fella understand.

Hi Zubaz,I think that basically it's more of a showing of moral support than anything else (like tying a metaphorical yellow ribbon round a tree). As far as I understand it is being handed over to the Palestinian authorities.
Which kind of begs the question ,if they know who the kidnappers are why don't they do something? doesn't it?
By the way thanks for signing Zubaz. You're a gentleman and a scholar.
