Reid is Correct - We can not WIN the Civil War in Iraq

The U.S. Military WON the war that Congress authorized to remove Saddam and destroy his military. Our troops did an outstanding job and there is no doubt that we won that war.

The second war in Iraq began to develop the day after Saddam fell with the riots and has been getting worse ever since. Our removal of the control exercised by Saddam was NOT replaced with a level of force that was able to prevent the factions that hate each other in Iraq from organizing and fighting for control of the country. In addition, we were unable to prevent foreign terrorists from entering Iraq after Saddam fell and setting up operations from which they are making the sectarian violence worse by attacks like the one on the Golden Mosque about a year ago.

Senator Reid is 100 % correct and just about every senior military leader has said we can not win the civil war in Iraq. Most of the generals said in the end the surge will not bring stability to Iraq only the concerted effort of the Iraqi people can end this civil war that rages in that country. Even if for a brief period the attacks in Baghdad are lower the attacks like we saw on Wednesday clearly demonstrate the underlying hate of the factions within Iraq and the foreign terrorists are not under control. We are not able to control the level of violence with 160,000 U.S. Troops even with the help of the Iraqi forces we have trained. When we leave, this Civil War will continue until the Iraqi people find a way to end the killing. It may be because one side destroys the other or the country splits into factions along the lines of the three religious factions. It is also possible that the fighting and death will get to a point when the vast majority of the Iraqi’s force an end to the fighting.

Our military won the war they were sent to Iraq to fight. The Commander-in-Chief allowed a second war to emerge that we are not staffed or equipped to fight. Thus the loss that Senator Reid talks about is the loss of the war caused by George W. Bush. No matter how long we remain in Iraq the basic hatred and fight to control Iraq will not be changed. That is why we have LOST this second war- The Civil War in Iraq! If we had followed the advice of our military leaders and followed the military planning with the 500,000 troops when Saddam fell the situation today might be very different. The reality is Bush did not listen to the military experts and turned his back on decades of military training and experience when he sent 150,000 troops when the military experts said we need more then 3 times number. What might have happened is speculation. The reality is that we can not win the Civil War in Iraq with 160,000 of our brave military.

It is time to accept we won the war Congress agreed to fight in Iraq and lost the war that Bush allowed to develop after Saddam and his army was defeated.

The use of a presidential VETO only shows what the president opposes It does NOT say a law is just. The Courts fill that task!

We weren't talking about whether or not a law is just. Just who makes them...and it AIN'T the courts! And even THEY can't say if it's just or not. Only if it's constitutional or not. Which is not the same thing.

the courts were never given this power in the constitution

but if the courts won't inforce a law how effective is the law

WE ARE NOT WINNING THE CIVIL WAR IN IRAQ!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is good, cause we are not there to fight a CIVIL WAR! You are arguing that we are fighting something we are not fighing. Good argument on your part. Not very bright but that is just like you.

The use of a presidential VETO only shows what the president opposes It does NOT say a law is just. The Courts fill that task!

Once again you prove you are less than bright. The three branches of our government works like this. The legislative branch makes a law. The President signs the document to make the law valid and legal. The Judicial branch is called in only as a last resort to declare if the law is constitutional or not. What is just in this country is what passes through the two branches of government. And if necessary the judiciary is called in if a bad law is signed but the president. If the president veto’s a bill and the Congress does not have the constitutional two thirds majority to override the veto then the law was not just. You would know this if you graduated 6th grade.

“This is good, cause we are not there to fight a CIVIL WAR! You are arguing that we are fighting something we are not fighting.”

Iraq is a Civil War that is being aggravated by al Qaeda and Iran. It is however a Civil War. That is the denial that Bush and Cheney live in and it looks as if many on this Blog site also live in denial. ALL the senior military acknowledged the VAST majority of the attacks are by sectarian groups and each wants to CONTROL Iraq! The government we enabled to come into power is controlled by the Shea but that government CAN NOT control Iraq at this time. Whenever we leave there will be a more intensive fight to see WHO will control Iraq or even if Iraq remains a single country!

IT IS TIME FOR US TO GET OUT!!!!!!!!!! LET THE IRAQI POPOLE SETTLE THIS ISSUE!

You seem to read only the current events that make us look like we are losing. How about the current events that you seem to miss, like the captured Iranian generals, or the facts like Iran is funding both sides of the “civil war” or that AQ is also working on both sides of the “civil war” does not sound like a civil war when the people who want to kill us are fighting on both sides of the conflict. It is hard to call it anything other than the war on terrorism. We have a nation state supporting the destabilization of a fledgling nation and add to that AQ who is sworn to destroy us is fighting on both sides of the conflict as well as their own attacks. Take them both out of the mix and your “civil war” dies a quick death.

LET THE IRAQI POPOLE SETTLE THIS ISSUE!

They settled this issue with the elections. Things were getting quiet and then Iran and AQ kicked in and all this because for months prior to that the democrats were screaming that we had to leave because there was a civil war and we can’t fight in a civil war. We told the enemy how to get us out of the country without having force us out. The democrats seem to be working with the terrorist here. What do you think?

“They settled this issue with the elections.”

We were told that was the answer. The government in Iraq has not been able to control anything. The reconstruction effort is a total failure. Billions can not be found. There is no water, electric and the oil production has not materialized. The projects that have been completed were done so poorly they are not working and the terrorist attacks have destroyed most of what was done. The latest Inspector general report on the reconstruction said is just about a TOTAL FAILURE. We wasted $20 Billion dollars and have NOTHING to show for it. We handed out another $9 Billion in cash which can not be accounted for. The number of U.S. dead, Iraqi dead is at an all time high. There are between 2-3 Million Iraqi people that have fled the country because of the violence. If you believe we are winning on ANY front you are dreaming!

such as hurricane relief

with an line item veto the president could veto all or at least most of that pork

if you want to know where all of that surplus went it went to pork

U.S. April Death Toll in Iraq Passes 100
By KIM GAMEL (Associated Press Writer)
From Associated Press
April 30, 2007 5:57 AM EDT
BAGHDAD - Five U.S. troops were killed in separate attacks in the capital this weekend, including three in a single roadside bombing, the military said Monday, pushing the death toll past 100 in the deadliest month so far this year.

Both attacks occurred in eastern Baghdad, a predominantly Shiite area where American and Iraqi forces have stepped up their activities as part of a security crackdown that began on Feb. 14 to quell the sectarian violence.

“if you want to know where all of that surplus went it went to pork”

I suggest a basic Math course for you. I agree we should end the PORK but the TOTAL OF ALL THE PORK is not close to the $5.7 Trillion Surplus Bush claimed would be developed from 2002 to 2012. The TOTAL PORK in the current year budget is about $30 Billion. The annual budget deficit last year was $600 Billion or 20 TIMES the TOTAL PORK.

you forgot about the 20 billion in the current bill that bush is going to veto

Yes, we are. Show me a battle we have lost. Show me ground given up to the enemy. Not one place in the war on terror have we lost ground except in Spain. We win the battles yet you claim loss. The only way that can be if you are on the side of our enemy.

You claim to have been in the military and you claim to have gone to War College yet you seem shocked and surprised to find out that in wars we get attacked by the enemy. I guess that is because you are a socialist liberal democrat and used to attacking your own side during war. Welcome to reality where just because we get attacked does not mean we have lost the battle or the war.

First the objective was to establish a stable democracy in Iraq. We helped set up a weak government dominated by the same group that rules Iran and we have nothing close to a stable Iraq.

The reconstruction program after 4 years has FAILED. Most of what was built has been destroyed by the violence. People still do not have water electric or fuel. Over 2 Million Iraqi People have fled the country. This month we lost more troops then in any month this year and near a record. Killing among Iraqi' is up and the destruction is getting worse. The government has not kept its commitments and in not capable of controlling the country. We have spent 4 year training hundreds of thousands Iraqi Military and police and even with 160,000 American troops can not prevent the continuing violence. We put more troops into Baghdad and the violence takes place else ware. When we deposed Saddam al Qaeda was not operating in Iraq to the extent they are today. We have enabled the radical elements of the Moslem World to recruit millions of new radicals that would be happy to try another 9/11. This is what you call a victory. You are a GRUNT is the worst sense of the term. YOU have no understanding other then a blind support for a President that lied and turned his back on the military by sending them into combat for no valid reason and without the manpower and equipment to accomplish the mission he gave them. BUSH is responsible for the death of over 3,000 brave Americans and wants to continue killing more in a Civil War he allowed to develop!

these new radicals are yesterdays non radicals as i have said there is no real non radical muslim

if these two groups have been killing each other for 1300 years how do you blame that on bush

"if these two groups have been killing each other for 1300 years how do you blame that on bush "

They were killing each other NOT Americans in Iraq until Bush invaded that country! We got NOTHING including a safer America by the death and injury of our troops to say nothing of the Trillion Dollars this unjustified war will cost!

i believe the keyword here is develop means that it wasn't going until he came on the scene

"if these two groups have been killing each other for 1300 years how do you blame that on bush "

but sense you have stated that these two groups have been killing each other for 1300 years and bush has only been on the scene for 6 years

They were killing each other NOT Americans in Iraq until Bush invaded that country! We got NOTHING including a safer America by the death and injury of our troops to say nothing of the Trillion Dollars this unjustified war will cost!

they had been trying to shoot down american aircraft sense the end of the first gulf war in which part of the agreement for us not to take baghdad was the no flight zones

so that we could protect the kurds and the shii from air attacks from saddam

xaddam broke the treaty in the first or secound month of it by trying to shoot down american fighters and he countined to do so until the secound war

just before we invaded the GOVERNMENT OF IRAQ threatened to use their non existant chimical weapons on us. so it wasn't just us that thought iraq had these weapons so did the iraqi government.

saddam had the weapons and he gave/sold them to sieria and iran which went from not knowing what a nuke was to being within 5 years of building one

which is about were the iraqis were when we invaded

Not true as usual. The objective was to remove Saddam Insane, and wipe out the AQ camps that were being build to replace the ones lost in Afghanistan.
The only way to ensure that AQ does not return is to have a stable government. The only way to stop a stable government is to have Iran and AQ play games in Iraq and have the nit wits on your side of the isle to support them by demanding the removal of troops that are fighting the war on terrorist. Muddy the waters if you wish but the facts are facts as long as the soldiers are there the terrorist don’t have a stronghold in that country. A foothold, yes, but less than they had before we started.

We helped set up a weak government dominated by the same group that rules Iran and we have nothing close to a stable Iraq.

Stabilization takes time, It is not done in minutes, hours, days, or even years. Bosnia is still in the works 12 years after we went in to stabilize it. Why are you not screaming about how Mr. Clinton failed to fix that problem before he left office?

You are a GRUNT

Thanks!

Saddam prevented the fighting by force. When we deposed him and his government and did not have a level of force to stop the factions that hated each other from organizing and fighting each other the Civil War Began. If Bush had listened to the Generals and sent a force level capable of controlling the factions and prevent them from arming and organizing we would not be seeing g the level of violence we see today. If we could have prevented foreign terrorists from coming into Iraq after Saddam fell we would not have the al Qaeda operations in Iraq. Thus it was Bush first by deposing Saddam who
kept control and then by not sending a force level capable of controlling the factions in Iraq that has caused the Civil War that exists today!

they had been trying to shoot down American aircraft sense the end of the first gulf war in which part of the agreement for us not to take Baghdad was the no flight zones

so that we could protect the Kurds and the shii from air attacks from Saddam

xaddam broke the treaty in the first or second month of it by trying to shoot down American fighters and he continued to do so until the second war

just before we invaded the GOVERNMENT OF IRAQ threatened to use their non existent chemical weapons on us. so it wasn't just us that thought Iraq had these weapons so did the Iraqi government.

NONE of these things posed a danger to the U.S. The sanctions and the no Fly zones were keeping Saddam under control. We had the UN Inspectors back into Iraq and if Bush had allowed them to complete their job we would have learned what we KNOW TODAY-- Saddam did not have WMD or and sort of a nuclear program!

That is BS. There was no reason to attack Saddam in March 2003. He was no threat, the weapons inspectors were back in Iraq and the military Assessment was that Saddam had NO capability to attack ANYONE!!! Bush did not want the UN Inspectors to complete their work because he feared they would expose the lies he and Cheney told us about the
Saddam Weapons program! We know that the CIA Intel DID NOT support much of what Bush and Cheney claimed about the danger from Saddam!
