Shootings

With palms together,
Good Afternoon Everyone,

I just returned from Zen Center's afternoon practice period. On the way home I listened to the news on CNN and heard about the killings in Virginia. I have been to Roanoke several times. It is a very beautiful and peaceful place. But not today.

At this point, it is best to keep our thoughts on the many victims and their families of this awful set of events. My prayers are with them as they grieve. We should keep our attention on the victims because it would be so easy to become enraged Some of us might rage against the sort of person who would do this. Others might rage against the system or gun laws or other such aspects of the situation. And yet rage in any form is not useful. It only serves to misdirect us.

People died today unnecessarily. That is a clear tragedy. Let us pray and work toward building a community and nation where such events are more rare than memory can recall.

May we each be a blessing toward this end.

Yeah. Afraid I'm one of them.

Sodaiho,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on today's tragic event. Kids aren't supposed to die in school...but they do and they have again today. I sit watching the TV in numbness asking questions. What's it all about? Why, how could someone do that? What can I do? Certainly, as you suggest--pray for all those involved and work with one another in trust, love and hope for a better tommorrow. It might start with just a smile to a stranger.

Thanks for these wise words. I will endeavour to be mindful of these words in the coming days.
