I have a ton of Magic cards, but no one to play so they sit in storage.

Yes, it is a shame isn't it? My wife and I got into Magic big time about five years ago and bought literally thousands of dollars worth of cards (mostly new, I wasn't about to spend the kind of money they wanted for mint 'vintage' cards)but then one day we just quit playing, for no good reason that I can remember... oh yeah, now it is dawning on me... something about too many cards to go through to build a deck, yeah, that was the excuse. It's a shame too because we had so much fun playing against each other... the wife and her damned green and white deck vs. my black and red deck. Those damn Rowan Treefolk or whatever the hell they were in the green flavor... hated them when she dropped them onto the table.
And as far as Axis and Allies, I WISH I could find people who were interested and serious enough to play! My friends and I would play for entire weekends, sometimes logging four and five hour games... it was great! Now though, even though the wife is 'willing' to play, I find that it takes more time to set up the board than the look on her face is worth, if you know what I mean.

I went and had a look at the empire you gave me the link to. How does that work? I mean does my empire score add into that empires score? Would I loose *my* personal empire ranking if I joined?.

I think you're talking to Quixen and not me but the link he gave is to The Galactic Core which isn't an empire although it does host private forums for 6 different empires at the moment.

The Galactic Core is a site that has a lot of folks interested in GalCiv2 but they also have other attractions as well. 'Joining' the Galactic Core changes nothing in regard to current GalCiv2 empire membership.

In any case all scores you have are associated with the character that earned the score. You can have up to three characters which could be all in the same empire, all in different empires, in no empire at all, or any combination of the above. A character can't be in two empires at the same time. If you leave an empire and join another your score follows your character. It's subtracted from the empire's total that your leaving and added to the total of the empire you join. If you were to quit the new empire and 'go back' everything would go back to the way it was.

Have you tried the Axis & Allies PC game? It avoids all that setup time. I think there are newer versions of the board game and maybe even some different PC versions.

The one I still play is Axis and Allies: Iron Blitz from Hasbro. It's identical to the old Milton Bradley board game but it adds a number of different starting scenarios. It stills works on XP anyway. I've seen it on Amazon for less than $4 plus another $4 shipping.

Yes, I have the game for the PC. I thought it was the only version but if there are more, it is just the plain jane game, from Hasbro of course. The only problem I have with the PC game is I usually find myself altering the unit costs and attack/defense values to the point where cheese just flows from my keyboard. Besides, the board game was more fun because of the pieces IMO.
I asked my family for the new, Avalon Hill version for Christmas. God bless them for at least they tried... I think they got me the Pacific Theater scenario 'pack' or something along those lines. To listen to my younger brother state that there were literally tons of Axis and Allies titles on the shelf (he is 17) and he just didn't know what to get... I gave him an A+ for the effort even though I was just a bit disappointed after all the pre-Christmas hype the family gave me regarding my 'most asked for gift'.
Oh well, it just isn't the same anymore. I'm starting to realize what the grandparents meant...

I still have that, I think. I'd forgotten about it because my opponents dried up and the 'AI' was fraktarded. I had better games against myself, just trying to do the best each turn with each side, that I could get from the single-player mode. I never got Iron Blitz, though. It didn't seem like it was worth $25 or so to add submarines, new airplane graphics, and a few scenarios.

Yes. The little pieces are a big part of the game. Never did have enough of the little white and red chip things for a good battle for Moscow. I always had to add nickels to the game.

Didn't everybody? You knew it was getting intense when the dimes hit the table!

You can actually buy extra packs of the red and white tokens, well hre in australia i did anyway. They came out about the same time as the Pacific and Euro theatre packs were released.....a instant buy the moment i saw them. They were about $14.65au so a bit less for you guys in the states....

the 'AI' was fraktarded

I have the PC game as well and this was very much the case. I think the AI at one point, in one of my games, just quit. Started buying a bunch of stupid stuff that it really couldn't use. I played for a few months then vowed to never pick it up again. I also played quite a bit on-line but it seemed every time either myself or my opponent would lag and lose connection. It was about worthless.

Do you play chess?

I love chess. Do not play much anymore for the same reasons most people don't play much. They can not find anyone to play.

something about too many cards to go through to build a deck,

Always a good excuse if you ask me. I myself started collecting during the Arabian Nights series. Spent thousands like yourself. Bought a few older cards and bought a few boxes just a couple months ago. I intend on playing again... I just do not know when. I actually played in a tournament once in Austin Texas in 96' I think. Won my first few rounds really easily. Played a black / white deck believe it or not. The fourth round opponent taught me that I never wanted to play sanctioned again. A 12 year old girl brought her daddies deck and kicked the ever lovin snot out of me! Never again I muttered as I left the table, tail tucked. hehe.

I miss playing Axis and Allies with my friends and yes... we always used nickels and dimes... hell I even think we broke out quarters at one point!

Yeah, that's what I say to myself too...
Never played in the tournaments although I have had a few opportunities to do so. I wasn't well versed with all of the rules regarding the tournament play but when informed that upon losing I would lose my deck to the winner ( I guess like racing for pinks?) I immediately put the idea of competing out of my mind. It wasn't lack of faith in my deck or ability, just the point of the matter... my cards are cherished enough to not be given or lost 'away'.

I would lose my deck to the winner

The only way I had seen that rule was if we were playing a sealed deck, single elimination tournament. Rules were simple enough. Ante into the tourney with $20 cash. You got 1 sealed deck of the base block or core cards and 2 sealed booster packs of your choice of the block you were playing. Like Urza's Saga. You assembled a deck with the cards you opened, sometimes trading was allowed, sometimes not. Then played. If you lost, you lost your deck. Winner received all the cards, and a cash prize depending how many people entered. Was a pretty nice tournament if you won.

I also loved to play a game called Titan by Avalon Hill.
