Submit several losses.

OH cool i think i could do that.

too funny

AFAIK, the purple heart medal doesn't display in the forums. I don't know whether it is a bug, or if Stardock decided that it was too easy to get and removed it.

Submit several losses.

I think several equals 5. Also as Marshall mentioned the purple heart doesn't show up in your forum posts, don't know why. It's too bad because it is a pretty medal.

Kryo, isn't there something we can do about this? I admit, despite the purple heart medal being a sign of my defeats, it would be kind of cool to have it displayed on the forum. Ahhh, the sweet smell of defeat.

The only thing is to ask Stardock and get them to make the necessay change to display it.

We do expect to implement medals on the AltMeta. The Purple Heart, the Racial Medal and a Versatility Medal (wins in all bracket types) are those among discussion. We also anticipate having the ability to link to a display of AltMeta medals similar to the current AltMeta banner. Of course you'd have paste it into each post to get it to show up and this is all still to be defined and implemented.

I like this. Any time frame on this at all?

Unfortunately not--been pretty busy of late.

Hmmm, I posted 7 defeats and the purple heart didn't show up any where, not in here or in the game. Maybe they did away with it all together? I am however fast aproaching my 20th win:o)

Retires don't count for the purple heart. You gotta take your lumps, you can't just give up and expect to be rewarded

Oh, this purple heart sounds so cool. You have almost motivated me to go try and lose a few games...

Really no point in losing 5 games if the Purple Heart Medal is disabled.

The intent of the medal was not to promote people intentionally losing. It was to promote people submitting all games even if they happen to lose now and then. It is an easy medal to abuse and as Quixen mentioned not much point if it doesn't show up. But I still favor the medal and would (at some point) like to try and get it to show up. I think this medal appeals to a certain segment of folks that feels it makes a statement. I think if earned appropriately the medal has value, if not then it doesn't. This really is not that different from any other medal.

Ah, ok, well I did post 3 military defeats; but unless the purple heart is going to show up, I don't see any reason to post defeats, do you?

Not if your trying to lose intentionally.

However, with that said, points are points, and if I spent a significant amount of time playing a game and lost I most certainly would post the game.

Just my opinion of course.

Well although I was suppose to get a *real* Purple Heart; because of being in a jeep accident while in a war zone when I was posted to Camp Holloway in Pleiku Vietnam. At the time I refused it; because the jeep wreak was not part of a combat mission; but rather I wound the jeep out to tight on a gravel road and it fish tailed and I rolled it up into an empty ammo bunker.
My XO (executive officer, 2nd in command) told me that any time a soldier loosed blood in a combat zone he qualifies for a Purple Heart. I informed him that I though it would cheapen the medal for those that won it for being wounded in an *actual* combat situation. The XO, said that it really didn't matter; because the regulations stipulated that the purple was to be given to *ALL* service personnel that lost blood in a combat zone regardless of how the blood was lost.
I continued to refuse it, and he said that he could not force me to take it; but that his opinion was that in later life I would regret not taking it, and guess what he is right. I also found out that any Purple heart recipient gets $10 a month for the rest of his life. I know that isn't any big deal; but now I am trying to get a service connected disability; because of all the physical problem I am having associated from that wreak.
Any how; because of a lot of service personnel having their records destroyed by a fire in either Missouri or Illinois (I can not remember which), the Veterans Administration could not find any proof of my having a jeep wreak or of being in a coma for 3 days. They denied the claim back in 1983 and did what they call a final adjudication which means that it could not be re-opened unless or until I could *prove* that the jeep wreak was factual.
Well to make a long story a tad shorter. After the advent of the Web, I tracked down my old XO, yes the same one that said I would regret refusing the purple heart, he sent me a notarized letter on Department of Defense letterhead, countersigned by the Major under him (my old XO is currently in charge of the Army's Combat Readiness Center), to both myself and my VA DAV (Disabled American Veterans) rep.
My DAV rep and I sent it in and the VA re-opened my claim because I needed to send them "New and Material Evidence" before a finally adjudicated claim could be opened. Any way had I accepted the Purple Heart in the first place I would have had the proof of the jeep wreak; because on a Medal Citation it gives all the reasons surrounding the reason for the citation.
So, although I is I guess sort of misplaced vanity (I suppose), I sure would like to see Stardock re-institute the Purple Heart.

Being former Military myself I can see where you were coming from on both counts.

As a soldier I would have refused it also.
As a civilian I tend to think that accidents happen every day. With military experience under my belt I would have to say I would not have faulted you if you took the medal to begin with. The fact is you were in a combat zone. Your life was at risk in a foreign country that your country asked you to defend. Through an accident or not, you were severely injured in the line of duty. Not like you were rushing off to Saigon to get a little nookie nookie you know.

As a soldier I have to revert back to the whole black beret thing. Talk about a dumb move on their part. The beret being black, maroon or green... meant something. They just decreased its value when they made it standard issue.

It would be nice if Stardock would fix this. If not, I am sure sometime in the future the Almeta will have a replacement.

I came into this game late; because I only started playing on the 17th of March; but I have been playing every day pretty much all day/night with very little sleep. I don't think I am doing to bad considering how short a time I have been playing. In my info it says that I joined back in 2004; but that was just joining Stardock to download some of their free win tweaking utilities.
I guess it is the addict in me. I smoked cigarettes for a little over 26 years and then after having to have a stint put in my heart I gave them up cold turkey back almost exactly a year before 9/11. I will be coming up on 7 years without them, and I sure wish I had all that money I would have spent on cigs.
If you don't mind my asking, how long ago were you in the service? I enlisted 10 days after my 18th birthday back in 1971, went to Nam in 72-73 and got out in 74. I wonder how may my age are in here playing compared to those less then half my age, lol. I guess it is like my VA doc says, that I am still 18 mentally; but now my almost 54 year old body has a hard time trying to keep up with my that 18 year old mind, rofl

I enlisted in 1991 Just before my 21st birthday, and got out in 1998 after serving a tour in Korea. My father is retired military, I was raised a brat. Been all over the world. I will turn 37 in a few days and I still feel like I am 18 as well.

You would be surprised how many older people play this game. I do not think many younger kids play due to the complexity of the game. I tried to get my nephews to play, they are big into computer games. I even bought 2 copies and gave them away. They played for a few weeks, complained they could not beat it, and gave it up. I even tried to help, they wanted none of it. Not enough satisfaction for them I guess.

So, I see your playing the Metaverse. Have you joined an empire as of yet? I know there are quite a few players in "our" age bracket who are registered users over at The Galactic Core.

You should stop in and take a look. A really nice bunch of people. There are 6 or 7 empires who have their forum pages located there, and the Metaverse Council conducts their business there as well. I only mention this because I see your submitting Metaverse games. I warn you though. You may find a new home over there if you do decide to visit!

Well if they still have the games and don't want or use them, I know a couple of players that would play if they had the game; but just have a tight budget

I created my own empire, and it is comeing along. My empire "Sugien" is ranked at 186 in the empire listings. I will however stop over for a visit and think about it.

I forgot to mention that I am the only one in my empire and it is ranked at 186; but I don't know if that is good or not?

Quixen, have you ever played an old BBS game called BRE (Baron Realms Elete)? It is sort of like DA and DL; but text based. I use to play it on my own BBS and other local BBS's. I ran my BBS as part of FidoNet, and had the BBS on an old C=128 running in 64 mode with a whopping (for the times) 20Mb Lt. Kernal HD. I loved my old C=64, and it took some persuading and giving me a free 8088 IBM pc to get me to chang over ot pc's

No I sure haven't, as a matter of fact I have never played any text based games in my life. I was a teen when the commodore 64 came out, had a few friends that had them, and I think I actually played the first "Test Drive" on it.

I did not get into computers until I was in my late 20's. I started with an 8088 myself. I then built a 486 dx which I thought was so sweet. The last computer I built was 2 years ago. The one I still have mind you. (About time to build another here soon!)

186 is not to shabby Sugien. Actually pretty darn good.

I play many strategy games. Board games and computer games alike. I like the old Avalon Hill games personally. I have to say for play ability though, Axis and Allies steals the show for me and my friends.

I have always loved the science fiction based games, played a few like War Hammer 40K, Dark Future, and Battle Fleet Gothic. I have a ton of Magic cards, but no one to play so they sit in storage. The best computer space game I ever played prior to GalCiv II is a toss up between X-com UFO Defense series and Ascendancy.

There's a "How old are you thread" that's been kicked around a few times. It's been awhile since it's seen the light of day. It might be a good time to resurrect it if someone feels like searching it out.

I'm 54 as well, and I also had a heart attack that "helped" me quit smoking. Never was in the military although I did spend two years in military school. I think all the attention that certain folks paid to how shiny your shoes were or how high a quarter bounced off your bed pretty much convinced me that I wasn't cut out for the military, although I do respect those that have served.

As far as rank there's nothing wrong with 186. There are many empires of one or even two or three and there are empires of far more. The only thing about the rank is that currently the AltMeta takes data only from the top 100 empires. It's certainly possible to crack the top 100 empires with an empire of one but it'll probably take a little bit of work. It all depends on the size of galaxy you prefer to play (i.e. larger galaxies = higher score). Of course part of the point of the AltMeta is to provide a bracket system (still in the design phase) that will allow folks to more fairly compete with others that play similar game types.

Anyway this is a lot of information for a new player to instantly absorb, the best advice is to poke around, dig up some old threads discussing strategies and ask questions. In no time you'll be giving other folks answer to their questions.

As Quixen suggested you should stop by The Core if only to check out another source of GalCiv2 information. It's a good group of folks.

This is about the only computer game I play, unless of course you count Chess Master, or a few card games (I don't play solitare however). I likewise build computers, or I should say I use to. I quit both building them for others and fixing them; because it got to be too much.
I did teach my cousin enough that he was able to open up his own PC repair shop here in my small hometown. He had went to the local university branch for a pre-A+ certification; but after finishing it, he ask me if I could show him some stuff; because he still didn't know how to fix or build them, he only knew what all the parts were called more or less. I taught him all the old tech tricks, like leaving the powersupply pluged into the wall and then toughing the power supply case before unpluging it to ground your self and then not needing a ground strap. Also if there is a problem that he can not find to take all the cards out (except for the video card if it doesn't have on board video) and then putting them back in one by one until the problem crops up again.
Do you play chess? I also write poetry (had a few published in a minor mag http://www.dino-soft.org/poems.html), write gospel music & perform it as well as country music. (http://www.betarecords.com/paul.bryant).
I got that 186 empire rating only since playing my first game on March 17th of this year. On my profile it says that I have been a member since March 12th of 2004; but I only installed the game back on March 17th of this year. I think it has me being a member from that early date because of signing up with Stardock back them to downlaod some of teh windows tweaking software?
I went and had a look at the empire you gave me the link to. How does that work? I mean does my empire score add into that empires score? Would I loose *my* personal empire ranking if I joined?. I am going to go back to the page after playing my next game (I am turing into an adict, I have been playhing since my feet hit the floor today and just about every day since I installed this game, lol).
