Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar on G4TV

5 out of 5 at XPlay

https://www.galciv2.com

Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar is a PC strategy game. So why would we talk about it on WinCustomize.com? The user interface of it was created with DesktopX. Each screen is a .dxpack (just like the ones in the DesktopX objects gallery).

This week, G4TV's XPlay takes a look at the game. The average review score of GalCiv II: Dark Avatar is about 4.75 stars out of 5 putting it firmly in the top 10 best PC games in history.

You can read the full review here.

Wow that was awesome. I *loved* the BSG references and drunkard Col. Tigh, kick ass!

5 out of 5 shots, so say we all!

(of course I don't even play video/pc games, but that was still cool)

Top 10 best in history? Mighty bold claim!

You can look it up yourself. http://www.gamerankings.com go to reviews for PC and list in order. It's based on average review scores.  You need 20 to officially count. GalCiv II: DA currently has 18 and is hovering at 94% (i.e. average review a 9.4 out of 10).

Score ratings depend highly on how many people voted for it.

So...if the game sold 100 copies, and 93 people voted at 4.5 or better...you'd have a 93% ranking game.

GalCiv is doing a good job.

However, Brad....come on. In History? You're putting up a rookie against the likes of PacMan, and....oh good god...the list is virtually impossible to think of. The game is doing well, I'll grant you that based on user poll. (again statistics are based solely on those willing to participate in them - and you've made a buck or two on it)

It has a long way to go before it can stand in the ring with Ali....or play hoop with Jordan.

And yet....somehow, people wonder why I call you on this. Yeah the programs are fine...they work, but they are not made of platinum and you can't use them to walk on water. This is the kind of arrogant boasting that brings about my humorous attention.

Brad, have there been any reworks of the interface by the user community? That would be some cool modding!

EDIT: I found a library of Interface mods over at galciv.com.  Cool, but not as cool as I would have thought.

Morpheous: These are review scores, not user votes. The game has averaged 93% in published reviews. And we're not talking some fly-by-night review sites, either - both GameSpy and IGN gave it Editors' Choice awards. It's not Half-Life, but it's a big accomplishment for a game team which has never numbered more than ten artists and developers combined.

I would personally quibble with top 10 overall - that's going to change depending on what review sites your statistics favour. However, MetaCritic has it in the top 50, along with games such as Splinter Cell, Baldur's Gate, Thief, Age of Empires II and Neverwinter Nights.

@GreenReaper...

I agree with you.

Don't get me wrong....I am not taking pot shots at you and the rest of the developers. The game is worth getting and worth playing. A job well done in my eyes.

But Brad's comments remind me of the movie The Fast and the Furious..."just because you box, you think you can stand in the ring with Ali?" It's how he presents the accomplishments that make it look assinine. The top 10 in "History"...

Recent games will climb and fall off the list as new ones are developed...but creating a historical list, I am not sure if GalCiv would make the "Hall of Fame". That's how Brad is presenting the facts...

Then...you have to take in how many people are doing the reviews. Some sites or magazines generally have one, maybe two people playing the game and giving it an opinionated rating. Collect 10 people from 5 sites giving it a 5 star rating, doesn't justify the historical claim.

For the rest of the developers...please, don't take this personally. I think you're doing a fantastic job with the game.

I dont play the game but I am glad that you guys are getting the exposure that you deserve  I have been to game shops in my area and I ask the people there what they think of GC 2 and Dark Avatar, I always get POSITIVE feedback. People say it is in there top 10 or top 5 even!!
