Whats a bootskin ?

oh....that this thing that flashes on my screen when I reboot but leave the room to go to the bathroom?

Here's an idea.......points go away after a certain period of inactivity for an item. I'd suggest 30-45 days with no downloads. For a lot of logons and bootskins a short life. Personally I pull my own stuff when it becomes "dated".

So THAT'S how it's done!

Double the downloads if it has the word Vista in the title. Even if it has nothing to do with Vista.
Don't forget that.

What about downloading your own skin over and over again, something like a 1000 times a day, therefore making your skin a "Today's favorite", luring people into downloading your skin even though it's utter crap...?

Can I do that? I have an ObjectDock icon with 9 downloads, and I'd like to boost this puppy up, even though the interest covered by the subject is close to zero, and I'm talking Kelvin degrees here...

I have a better trick Night Train (not sure if I should take offense to your bootskin attack - which probably could apply to logons as well; I love bootskins, have released quite a few myself, most of my recent work is based on my own graphic work and most importantly I like my bootskins so I guess I won't take offense - had to do a double take though just to make sure   ).

Here's my better trick (cause if I keep talking I'll never stop), in the wb section I found a wb skin submitted by a user that was identical to another wb skin that was uploaded by another user maybe a week before hand. The skins are practically identical, I've compared random elements in the skins and saw the images were identical, the image dimensions were identical, the sizing & content margins were identical, the colors were identical, etc. etc. You get my point. The original skinner who uploaded his hard work got 84000+ downloads which is extremely decent for any wb skin, not many skins will ever make it that high. The 2nd wb skin which was ripped from the other user, got 118000+ downloads. No one ever removed the ripped skin - it's still available for download, no one ever questioned the user who uploaded the ripped skin about his work (his previous uploads to this site included a screenshot, just 1 - pretty impressive gallery of skins if I say so myself and he has never uploaded another skin since then, hmmm.....).

118,000+ downloads from 1 skin (which was an obvious rip) .... it would seem to me that's a real trick to getting lots of downloads - a very good trick!

You can always report such rips privately to a mod you know.  They can't know every skin by every user and multiple people probably mod teh same gallery and might not know that another existed.

Can't find one with 118000+ dls .... Ideal solution would be to email me [email protected] ...with links to both skins....

Or, go to the bathroom and forget to leave the room then realize that you must now leave the room to go change the drawers...  

sure your not adding too many zeros there?   , I think 118000 downloads on a ripped skin would have been noticed. Which skin is it?

I'd rather that via email only....nothing worse than erroneous accusations.....

I only discovered this recently myself within the last month or so, the skins have been available since sept 2005, I figured if no one else reported it to a moderator (and I couldn't have been the only one to notice this) then I shouldn't either.

If the suspicion of a rip is there it should be reported.  But it should be done privately to prevent any embarrassment for anyone.

I also just downloaded ArtRage 2 Free edition, I had never heard of it before, from what's shown on their website gallery, it looks like pretty cool software!

unclerob...my wiseassness wasn't directed at you specifically. Coincidence has it that you happen to have alot of updates in the update gallery. There was one specific skin (not by you) that prompted this post. It wasn't even touched by the artist as an update. They simply just reuploaded the skin.
Just pointing out (in a light hearted way) to new people that the people that have been around, know the things people try every now and then. Newer people seem to think we are all stupid and haven't run into this type of stuff before. Where they think they are being clever in finding loopholes in the system, it actually has a negative effect on their reputation in the end.... usually.

I would like to see Boot Skins packs that not only have the "Windows XP" and "Windows Vista" whithout the "Logo". Some are great without it and I do know what system I have installed.
