"Tough on Crime" is America's only idea?

When I listen about america's politics, I often hear that one of the favorable factors considering a politician's popularity is his tendency on being "tough on crime".

Which I find to be a total demagogic opinion.. sadly, in Canada, the conservative party also adopted such approach.

I would like to know.. is there an actual alternative proposed in U.S.A. to "being tough on crime"? Even if this approach hasn't actually worked, if you see the recent criminality figures; big punitions did not really drove a lot of people out of criminality.

You have more people in prison, and... that's all. Still a lot of crimes. Oh, and it cost a lot to the state.

You don't get out much do you?

American crime levels have actually be in decline for nearly a decade now thanks to being "tough on crime."

If you lock up criminals so that they're not on the streets, they can't commit more crimes.  I don't care about being "tough" on crime. I just want people who commit crimes removed from society.

My answer to the number of people in prison is that there should be more people in prison.

Well, if we make more things legal, then there's less crimes to commit!

I think Brad said it well. The number of people in prison is not a sympton - but a cure. They cant be committing crimes (other than on each other) while there.
