Your most sucessful ship(s)

I'm sure you've all at some point had a ship (Or ships) you considered to be really sucessful vessels. Perhaps they single-handedly saved a vital colony for distruction, perhaps they racked up an amazing number of kills, or maybe they were just so insanely lucky as to be memorable...

For me, I've had two such situations. One was during a war between myself (Terrans), the Korx and their Yor allies. The Acreans provided be with a fairly ugly laser frigate to help me out. It was more powerful than the ships I had been building so I named it the TAS Galaxy.

At one point it managed to fend off an attack on one of my colonies by three ships. Looking at the stats of the attacking fleet, I figured there was no way the Galaxy would survive so I skipped the battle sequence. Imagine my surprise when I returned to the map to see the Yor fleet blow apart, the Galaxy still floating prodly in orbit.

I constructed a military starbase nearby shortly after and, with the base's assistance, the Galaxy became my most important vessel, send several enemy fleets to an untimely demise. It was amazing to watch.

My second one was during a war with the Acreans (not during the same game obviously), which, just for anyone who's curious, they started because I had not built any combat ships at the time.

I hastily designed a 5 beam attack small hull ship and called it the 'Resolution' class. I quickly built a few of these ships and, as it turned out, they were highly sucessful, outgunning the Acrean ships easily. In particular, four such ships (the Resolution, the Resilience, the Remembrance and the Reliant), which I formed into a fleet called 'Alpha Wing', chalked up an insane number of kills, each achieving a level in the high twenties before the Acreans surrendered to me.

It was so much fun watching those ships kick ass...

What about you?

Hi!
What about you?

Recent DA ver. 1.5x.59 sandbox maso game, slowest tech, I played as Thalan.

All evil civ's went with missiles, so I went into point defenses and created two medium ships with three plasma guns, and 8 PD combos, tailored specially for Yor, who were flying around with many fleets of 3-4 small hulls with Harpoons for 25-30 missile attack. Short story even shorter: just one of my ships, that I sent to yor's core planets, removed over 60% of all yor's navy. That was ~35 small ships. After yor's conquest I turned to Drengin, but they were flying around with fleets with attack 70, so I could'n upgrade it to such an invincible ship, and it got destroyed in an action on one of drengin's core planets, when it hit a planet with some fregates and OFM on the ground. Still that was the first time just one of my ships did such a teremendous job.

I remember a game that I was playing in 1.3 versus all races. Over time, my diplomatic strategy had clearly promised me a loss, as the Drengin absolutely dominated nearly all of the galaxy. I was left to a strip of 4 planets and was surrounded on all sides.

Most of my main battleships and dreadnaughts had lost their fighter and frigate support ships; I pulled them out of Drengin territory in preparation for the end. Playing as the Terrans, I built the omega defense system on Earth and so stationed my handful of ships in orbit.

All of these ships were either of one or two classes, and all were at least level 5. Some were well above that. My design philosophy had been to build heavily defended large and huge ships -- and it proved to be a smart move militarily, regardless of how my grander strategy had collapsed.

It did not take long to lose all planets but Earth, and I the financial losses left me hemorrhaging huge amounts of cash. There was zero chance of me ever producing anything ever again.

Still, my ships held out above earth for months, defeating fleet after fleet of Drengin fighters and frigates. It was only when they managed to apply their better technology to massive ships with massive firepower that I even started taking damage.

It still took weeks for me to fall.

I’ve beaten off 180 (!!!) Drengin ships, most of which are Dominator class, at one research resource starbase. The resource was freed up when I conquered one of the minor races, and I had a constructor nearby when it was open to claim it. When the Drengin declared war I set up a scratch cruiser defense force.

The first wave of 95 ships came in a single week in December 2230. My cruisers and a few other odd ships did well, but they also died since my early cruisers didn’t have any armor. The accumulated battle damage from the waves of Drengin did them in. Even my newer armored cruisers took heavy damage from the 19 Drengin fleets. One of the later Drengin fleets was a real fleet with firepower similar to mine (but no armor), and that did in one of the critical armored cruisers, unarmored cruises, and other small hulls that made it to the show. But the line held. The two survivors had an experience level of ~350. I don’t know if that is good or not, but they did get more hit points.

The second wave of 85 Drengin ships in 17 fleets attacked in a single week in January 2231. A few reinforcement cruisers showed up, but all were old hulls with no armor. One by one the old cruisers went down until, again, only heavily damaged armored cruisers remained. At one point a single damaged armored cruiser was taking out entire Drengin Dominator fleets, so it was really touch and go. All the unarmored ships died like stuck pigs, which shows that mass attacks of old ships can be effective.

Two weeks later another real Drengin fleet attacked, and the only defenders were the 2 heavily damaged (10 HP of their ~30 or so). The Drengin attackers had a high attack rating and no armor, and we won but another armored cruiser died. The lone survivor is my Hero Ship. So in the last 2 months I’ve lost my entire fleet (~9 ships) to the Drengin’s ~190. Not a bad trade.

Image 6: The Krynn Hero Ship in February 2231

So now I have 1 heavily damaged armored cruiser to defend what is a lightning rod for the Drengin. Two reinforcements have arrived, but with the max spd 5/turn getting any more there will take a while. If another wave of Drengin Dominators how up I may lose the position. Even if I do that is OK since the Drengin are taking a real beating and their military rating is decreasing massively. Granted, they’re just losing their 0/0/3 0/0/0 Dominator class hulls, but that should hopefully such some of the wind out of their sails.

But I do hope Hero survives!

Hydro

P.S. –
The above AAR was written shortly after the mass Drengin attack. Hero did survive (at least as of August 2231), and I invested 2600bc to have him updated to the best technology, which doubled his attack and defense rating.

I had some tiny hull fighters above 40 hitpoints each one time! but only because they were just some leftover crap to fill a fleet with powerful ships,,,

that fleet hammered the Thalans for so many years, had all the big ships swapping and changing but the tiny hulls i just ignored untill i eventually had enough big ships to use up all the logistics and then discovered the tiny ships 40+ hitpoints!

Normally my best ship configuration is a large hull with around 20 points of defence and around 50 attack. Usually By the time i have massive hulled ships, the wars have already all been decided so i could not call them my most vitally important ships.

My most useful ship was a custom constructor on huge hull. During a pirate invasion a huge fleet of pirates muched on everybody. All the resources were wiped clean and the *!@!% were sitting next to our home worlds. I wanted those resources but the they killed every ship anybody made. I knew if I could get there I'd be way out of their detection range (gigantic map) so made a constructor with a huge hull and filled with hyper mk3's. got 160 moves and so I scooped up everything that wasn't nailed down. Worked so well I decided to make a troop transport like that with 138 movement. Then I started massing them at a rally point to eliminate a minor AI race, who just happened to be #1 in military and influence. Sucker discovered my plans before I was ready, some how, and launched a surprise attack wiping them all out. I never got chance to kill them though because they ended up absorbing all the major races and I "won". What cheese ...
