I've been accepted into Graduate School!

The letter came today to my parents house. My mom called my cell phone to tell me I had been accepted into the Graduate program at the University of Tennessee! And, if my mom read the letter correctly, I was also given an assistantship. If she didn't read it correctly, I'm on the wait list for an assistantship... which means if someone turns theirs down, I get their spot. Either way, I'm thrilled right now. I've been waiting since December to hear about this.

I GOT INTO GRADUATE SCHOOL!!!!

Sorry, I've been screaming since I heard. I'm almost too excited to type!

I suppose I should specify that It's the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. I forgot the Knoxville part.

I haven't decided yet if I want to study British Romanticism or British Neoclassicism. This is kinda funny, since these two are pretty much polar opposites. I love the wit and sarcasm of the Neoclassic Age -- I mean, any age that says, "The British need food, the Irish have a problem with overpopulation.... let the British eat Irish babies!" is pretty freaking awesome. However, the imaginative power of the Romantic Age is extremely appealing. Perhaps I'll just study both.

Other than that, I would also like to continue my studies in Fantasy literature. Fantasy literature is still being ignored by the academic community at large, and that's a shame. I think fantasy is worthy of study -- just as worthy as psychology, sociology, horror fiction, Gothic novels. I would even go as far to say that Lord of the Rings serves the same function for modern cultures that The Iliad served for the Ancient Greeks. But all that's more of a hobby than an academic pursuit.

I am rerally happy for you. Grad school is lots of work and with a Teaching Assistantship you will barely have time for yourself. Anyway make the best of your time at Grad School.

Fortunately, I haven't taken the easy road in my undergrad, so I feel a little prepared. I've also been an RA for the last two years, while taking full loads, teaching and writing a thesis... so hopefully I won't be too overwhelmed.

Fantasy is awesome. It amazes me that the human mind can create and go to those places. It's the ultimate form of creativity as far as I'm concerned.

I had so much fun with my undergrad thesis. It's the only time I could read Harry Potter and say "I'm not goofing off! I'm doing research!" and actually be telling the truth.

If you mean working on something you are passionate about, then yes, I hope so. As my adviser said when she introduced me at my presentation, "This thesis is exactly what a thesis should be: a combination of scholarly work and personal obsession." I thought my parents and friends were going to die laughing when she said that.
