WC2K7-Phase 2

The next set of changes

With the recent launch of WC2K7, we have instituted changes in how the site visually looks, its feature set, as well as general user policy.

The results so far have been very positive. Our traffic has nearly (not quite but pretty close) doubled since the beginning of the year.

Much of this has to do with raw speed. The new site is just much faster and much more reliable than the old site.

So now what?

Well, there's a number of changes we are looking at which we would like to discuss with you first. Here they are:

The Ratings System...

This may go away. You may have noticed that the forums have recently instituted the system we have on JoeUser.com where you can rate articles as "Insightful" or "Interesting".

We are looking at replacing the rating system with a similar system where users who really like something can give it a "Thumbs up" or a "Love it" or some other designation that is akin to what we have on the forums.

Each time a user does that, the author as well as the skin gets points which are then added up and looked at in tersm of number of love it's (or whatever it's called) per day as well as overall number which we use to rank skins and themes.

Existing skins would be converted to the new system.

What do you think of this?

Speaking of ratings...

So on the forums you now have ability to label a response as trolling as well as give them an insightful rating.  From this, we will be able to get a ratio of the # of insightfuls to trolling to calculate a level of "karma".  We haven't decided what to do on this yet.

The Forums as you know them...

Most of the work on the forums has been to create a stable, reasonably fast forum system.  But the forums link at the top may be replaced with a new link called "Community".  This will no longer lead to "the forums" but instead a landing page that will give you a bird's eye view of what's going on overall in the community -- not just new forum posts but skins and themes getting lots of comments, active discussions, etc.  The Articles tab may be integrated into this.

There wouldn't be a "category view" like you currently have on the forums unless you selected to look at the index. Instead, it would focus on the hottest topics and the hottest categories based on activity.

Moreover, the community page would remember you -- what threads you were participating in, what skin comments you've been making, etc. and allow you to easily keep in touch with what you've been doing.

Personal Pages

The personal pages are another area we would like to overhaul to turn them into a hub for users to know exactly what's going on around here with things they've participated in and customize to make it truly THEIR page (insert custom RSS feeds, custom CSS, etc.).

The Gallery

Nearly all the activity takes place in the galleries on WinCustomize.com. And that's where we'd put our best technology so that each entry has context sensitive data.  The big old right bar we have today may disappear entirely to be replaced by a context sensitive dock that gives information on the current category you're looking at (for top authors, top skins, tutorials, etc.) which the old site had but was buried in too much info.

And individual skins and themes which would display other creations by the author and not display other galleries and such but focus just on that creation.

We'd also like to update the uploading system to allow skinners to allow ports or derivative works of their creation and in turn those deriviatives could be automatically  linked to the original skin. I.e. if someone makes a cool WindowBlinds skins and wants to make a corresponding Winamp skin or Rainlender skin, they can see if the author allows their creation to be used to create derivatives and when they upload it, link back to the original which would link back thus making independent creation of suites much more easy.

The Vista Transition

What is and isn't possible on Vista still is being probed. Animated wallpapers are quickly taking off and dynamic content is nearly here. But there's still a role for new kinds of software.

But in the meantime, what we hope to do with WinCustomize.com is create an environment where people can get together and learn how fun and interesting skinning all these various programs is and meet other people of the same mind.

Your Input

We're interested in hearing what things you'd like to see more of and which features you don't like that you think need to be changed.

There's a lot of work ahead of us, but we feel 2007 is the crucial year -- it's the slow but steady transition to Vista and we need to make sure WinCustomize gains the features, reliability, and performance to best serve users as the new generation of skinners, which have already begun arriving, get up to speed as well as support the existing skinners who have helped make this community such a success.

An award for the most loved would be good to see. I'm not sure as to how you're already planning on showing the most loved, but putting an award on their personal site would be cool. IMO.

I'm not really sure about this post rating system, as I don't use joeuser. People are going around rating their own comments as trolling just because it's fun.

I really like the idea about converting the forums to the "community" section. I hardly use the category view either, I just go straight to the recent posts (assuming it actually gets updated and several hours worth of new posts don't just disappear between pages). It would be nice tying in skin comments and such because right now they seem so distanced from the activity on the forums. It's like there's the gallery section and the skinners, and then there's the forums and the active people there, but not much interaction between the two.

As for the personal sites, they don't seem all that "personal." We can only make use of the options given to us. Filling in some personal info here and there, selecting favorite skins, photo albums for subscribers, but that's about it. I had already suggested the Bio section where the users could add in their own information at will, without just filling in data fields.

Oh yeah, and what about cleaning up the help page? *nudge nudge* A lot of that stuff on there is either outdated, not a tutorial, not helpful at all, etc. There's a bunch of good tutorials and they're all lost in the abyss that is the Articles section (hence why I made my tutorial index that got lost the same way. )

Seeing all this new stuff should be interesting.

Amen.

A PM Center as it was discussed for long time now (some space in Personal Page where you can see who and what commented on your skins, who replied to your posts and other stuff - e.g. Notifications by Admins for skin rejection/approval, hot news, competition announcements, etc) is still in the air? That would make a world of a difference. It might take time to get it coded, but when done it would be really really helpful for all.

I'm not sure about post rating. It's too easy to abuse and I can't imagine many people actually using it. It may be more useful on a blog site than here.

For the ratings a 'thumbs up' sounds like a good idea. Each skin in your library could then show number of downloads and number of 'thumbs up'. Those two together would give a better indication of what people think about a skin. Though some sections are more active than others which could make it misleading. You could have a ratio of 'thumbs up' to downloads - but is that getting complicated?

Forum: I always go to 'View all recent posts', I have no use for any of the categories. Though it is nice to have it available if you are looking for something specific.

Proverbial "nail on the head" as it were. Community rather than a dry "forums" has a warmer more personal feel to it. Keep up the good work.

I don't think (IMO) there is much more that we can ask for a Personal Site, which is not personal, it's more of a Personal Account. Maybe some kind of site skinnning could be implemented, where the user can actually create a skin for his/her site, since this is the biggest skinning dedicated website today. But that maybe is too much.

Also i assume the skins will be freely available to all visitors, i mean no limitation like the current ones. All will have the chance to see everything posted? Not 3-stars up skins only, right?

Though it is nice to have it available if you are looking for something specific.

I too think categories should stay hidden somewhere just for reference reason. In case you look for a specific post, etc.

I use the view all recent posts but would definitely use a community page with articles included. I would also love the gallery setup you describe
..when displaying other creations by the author also include the # of points earned.

And of course Private messages would be welcome..with the option of allowing or not allowing a popup.

Also include an area for Skinners to post their screenshots of upcoming new skins on the community page. Yes...they are in the screenshot section of both the forums & the SS gallery..But the section in the Forums doesn't leave a lot of room for comments and not that many view the SS gallery..but include them on the community page & they would get considerable more feedback.

I think it's a very good idea but perhaps i little add: not just "trolling" but "bad trolling" and "good trolling" i explain when a post on the forum leave in a way of bash with trolling or launch an eletic trolling like a picture or word who means "i know all and you not lalala" that's bad but when the troll come to leave the stress by humor in my mind that good.

Thanks for those ideas i can't wait to see that all!

A gallery for user created CSS?  Share YOUR WC skin!
Also include an area for Skinners to post their screenshots of upcoming new skins on the community page
Works in progress would be great!

Oh yeah, and what about cleaning up the help page?
I'd like to see app-specific help in the galleries.  Let tutorial be uploaded there and commented on like skins.

Points for forums posts?  meh.  Unless I can trade my points in for frogbucks spendable at the company stoe I'm not interested.

Another thing that I'd like to see is tie in from WC.com to irc.stardock.com

There is a core group of folks that hang out all over there.  I'd love to see more people come in and stay a while.

How about a java client in the Community section of WC?

Something like an applet for IRC within the site? That would be nice for frequent users.

Well, I agree with what Bebi stated above. It would be great to reorganize the tutorials that a variety of users have put together over the years to make tutorials for specific apps much easier to find.

**** I would love to see a solved icon next to those forum posts that are...They could then be moved into their own forum heading....that is necessary so they don't get lost under so many new posts. This would make it easier for those assisting others as well as those searching for answers. ps...sorry for wanting to add more work for the mods...

Thank you for the information. I found ratinig something bad. Someone with very good points can give all the rest a 1, so that nobody can be the first only the one who's already on top.. It sounds silly and childly, but I know some forums where they do this..

I'm going to be posting mockups in the next few days of what kinds of things I would like to see on the site to get your feedback.
