I'm pissed. All my hard work is gone.

I was working on my special project when I decided to make a backup so if I mess up, there's a backup to go back to, so I started to export object.

Guess what? DesktopX suddenly used 750 MB ram and of course it crashed.

Well I checked out my current theme folder to recover it. Guess what? Folder is empty!! WTF??

I tried to run it again and there it is, my project. It looked normal. Till I tried to use it. All scripts is gone! What the heck happened??

did it generate a report?
Where can I find it?
Did you check your cache? C:\Documents and Settings\{userName}\Local Settings\Application Data\Stardock\DesktopX
Maybe it's still there.

then i'm guessing probably not.

i have the smart exception turned on so whenever an SD product borks it wants to generate a report to send to the appropriate area (even give you the mailing address, subject, and shows where to find the file to attach - C:\Program Files\Stardock\SmartException\ZippedExceptions

any thing of relevance found in the Event Viewer?
start - admin tools - event viewer

I checked it before I restarted DesktopX. There was just 2 files, first theme ini file and other objects description file. All script files were gone.

I am looking into events now.

I got no answers, I've started learning what generally gets asked when those that can help stop by - give them somewhere to start

i've seen another post or 2 at some time about scripts disappearing = looking.....

All I'm finding so far is:

reinstall scripten 5.6

be online when you save/export

Rolf, do you have IconX running?

Hmm I was online when I was exporting. Why is that required?

Those are just assumptions on my part - I also get a balloon in sys tray that says Im out of virtual memory quite often when I work offline in desktopX ...
Never happens online ....Im just used to it. But it does suck when you lose all your work.

I've usually been online when I play around with DTX so hadn't notice the diff of being off line.

Never had this myself. Works fine online or offline.

Maybe look at adjusting your virtual memory size in System Properties?
eg. System Properties|Advanced Tab|Performance Settings|Advanced Tabs ->Virtual Memory should be at the bottom

Ohh! Almost forgot to post what I intended.

I've been using FileHamster by Mogware during my work process to do real time backups. It's a very basic application compared to KeepSafe but, does the trick for me.

My virtual setting is currently at 2 GB, twice my system ram.

Fairyy~ I never got that message before since I had set it to a huge size.

Oh well in least I remember how to do some of fixes and modifications. It will take me about 2 hours to do again, however. Maybe shorter since I did it already though.

IMHO, it will be one of best object I ever made. This one was to be basic version though.

Thanks for all the help, though!!

Is that your minimum? Somehow mine get's bumped back down to 1.5 GB

XX, I havent seen that bug in a long time... 6-8 months.  Are you using the latest beta of DesktopX?

Ive increased the virtual memory over the months ..think im at the maximum. I have a new computer but im not sure I like it so im still milking this old one .......

SirSmiley, it's minium. It makes system easier to defrag. Slow hard drive.

Unfounuately it's a older version. I really need to get newer version of DesktopX.

I was thinking the same thing......I usually wont upgrade an application if things are working ok..maybe its time ..

Mmmm the magic dissapearing theme trick.
If the cache doesn't hold the files anymore, they are indeed deleted. My best link is to DesktopX's 'clever' cleaning process.

See, when you close DesktopX it scans its theme definition files and removes any files in the theme directory it thinks do not belond to the theme. (For example, if you copied a blahblah.txt file into the cache folder, then closed DesktopX, it will delete it.

It's 'housekeeping'.

I think however this is the function which is borked (based on a complete lack of evidence, but a hunch). When DX sometimes does a crash bunk, it's process ends, and it probably jumps into 'housekeeping mode', but being a crash of some sort, the memory or whatever that holds your theme definition has been buggered. SOOOoo, it goes 'AHA! No theme memory data, better clean up this messy cache folder of all these huge script files! BOOM.'.

Backing up the folder regularly sounds like a good idea, with automation or whatever, but hopefully there wont be an 'access' clash when DesktopX decides after various actions to dump the theme from memory into the cache folder. (ie it's own backup save feature, probably part of the same housekeeping programming, because during these 'auto dumps' is often when my cache goes bye bye)

Could be wrong though, don't want to sound like I have any idea how any of it actually works, just speculating.

The newest version of DX doesnt crash in a way that nukes your script data.  The most you'll lose is your 'latest' changes if it crashes on apply.

Yeah. Well the current status is this:

I am currently rebuilding the object slowly, with frequent exports that doesn't even overwrite original. The basic version is about halfway done, then finally the optimization, then it's finally ready for uploading.

While it's not really a new object for me, its scripts is heavily modified from original, so much that over 50% of original code is changed. By time I'm done with full version (not basic) I would have re-written about 75% of script.

Hopefully it will function much better than before.

I lost years of psd's, styles, shapes, music, video, texts, mail, settings, basically everything..a while back.

...really pissed me off at the time.. Ive since come to the conclusion that sometimes to start anew may be the best thing that could have happened.

3 things.. 1. everything happens for a reason. 2. backup often 3. glad i dont make DX themes
