Standalone or expansion?

I know DA is an expansion, but from the review at IGN, one gets the impression that DA is standalone:

Though the new expansion pack includes all the content from Dread Lords, this review will focus on the new additions.

So... can I play this game, if I only buy Dark Avatar??

You want to know if you can buy just DA itself ($29.95) without having GC2 already, so you can save money over the gold edition ($44.95)? In this case the answer is no. DA requires GC2 in order to be installed or played, so if you don't already have GC2 your cheapest option is to get the Gold Edition, which includes both.

Thank you!

That's what I wanted to know. I was confused from the quote in the review, that's all.

As a corollary question, do DA gameplay changes replace the DL originals, or are they an option ? While I like the idea of many of the gameplay changes (esp. colony types), I'm not sure how I feel about others, and can imagine wanting to play both types of scenario down the line.

Thank you for any response.

You can freely switch back and forth between playing DL and playing DA if you have both.

As Vinraith said, you can still play DL as it was after you have installed DA. However, within DA itself, only super abilities and mega events can be specifically toggled; the rest of the new gameplay mechanics cannot be disabled, or can only be disabled through modding.

Shelled out for the Gold Edition last night... unfortunately, the downloads didn't finish before I fell asleep!
