Suspeckted's Overbearing Music Reviews

For some music you've never cared existed.

I was reorganizing my cd collection today and thought I'd give you my low down on some recent purchases and initial responses:

Murs - 3:16 (Hip Hop)
Not good, very disappointing length and many songs really trashy without much style.

Lamb - Between Darkness and Wonder (electronic)
Very nice blend of unique female vocals and soothing rythms

Eyedea and Abilities - First Born
Eyedea's raps just as good as his recent release, but beats and melodies somewhat lacking. the album E & A that I purchased a few weeks ago is much better and regularly makes it into my cd player on my bike commutes.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell
Genuinely fun music...a little punky at times, but the music is simple and many catchy songs. You may know the song Maps that is getting some radio play.

Dido - Life for Rent
It's dido, so of course it tugs at the heart a bit and doesn't offer a lot of variety but this album has enough variation to be good as a complete album and won't keep you skipping tracks that are annoying. A good full through listen. White Flag is the radio hit on this song.

SA Smash - Smashy Trashy (Hip Hop)
Definite good album. one of the best gambles I've taken in awhile on hip-hop. these guys have some funny rhymes and some even better beats and hooks. Try downloading some and see what you think.

Burden Brothers - buried in your black heart
didn't like it the first time through but is definitely growing on me a lot. this band is made up of a number of other band's members. The reason I picked it up is because of the lead singer who was the lead singer/guitarist for an old band, The Toadies. It's not as good as a toadies album, but there are some good hard rock songs on here......and damn this guy had a cool voice....Yells almost as good as Dave Grohl of the Foo fighters. Toadies song you might know is Possum Kingdom, current Burden Brothers single is Beautiful Night.

311 - Evolver
don't waste your time. A few decent tracks, but you probably won't be using this disc to make any mixes for your friends or for your own road trips. You'll recognize 311's old songs Down or All Mixed Up, but their best song is probably Amber.....download this song today if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Alien Ant Farm - Truant
A very disappointing album after such a great selling album featuring their cover of MJ's smooth criminal. Again, if you get it for free give it a listen, but doubtful you'll find anything memorable. My fav. song off the first album is Movies...you may dig that one.

Basement Jaxx - Kish Kash
Many of you will recall their song Red Alert, but had no idea who it was by. It was played for a coke commercial featuring a larger kid dancing in the woods in front of his friends who were sitting a log "feelin'" the moves he was layin' down. This album is fun for sure. This UK dance/club group knows how to get rowdy and make some very original music. Download Hot N' Cold, my favorite song on the album. But some of their slower songs may have you recalling Moby's album Play. PS - I don't dance that much, and I don't think one needs to enjoy such to enjoy this album.

Atmosphere - Seven's Travels
Probably the best indie hip hop album of the year in my opinion. Slug, you've done it again...and I thank you. Check out Guns and Cigarettes off an old album to get a taste of this Minneapolis success story.

Nappy Roots - Wooden Leather
No question here that these guys have done some hard work. Just as good as their freshman album if not better. Don't let the first listen throw you, there's some hot ish on here that you'll be trying to turn your friends on to and you won't understand why more people didn't buy this the same day they bought Speaker Boxx....Outkast fans should love the Nappy Roots. Aww Naww from the first album, or Work in Progress from Wooden Leather might be some universally enjoyed songs.

Aesop Rock - Bazooka Tooth
This guys is THE MAN, in my eyes. A vocab that would frighten most professors and a fully automatic voice that blasts you over and over again. Many have a love hate relationship with Aesop Rock due to his focus on harder beats that aren't exactly optimistic, but his respect in hip hop as a white NY rapper is growing and you may hear more of him soon. Download Daylight and Nightlight if you want a great idea of what this guy is like.

Okay now that I've wasted my and your time I should go to bed....it's Monday tomorrow people! boo!

Apparently I'm talking to a Top 40 crowd. I knew my musical tastes were fairly eccentric, but come on!

Ted,
I've heard of maybe half these bands, but haven't really HEARD them, y'know? Although I have to admit I was never a big fan of 311 for some reason.

That's fine man, but I might even claim that 311 gave birth (mainstream-wise) to introducing the concept of turntables and rock music in the same song. That whole rap/rock genre. I do love the song Purpose on the self-titled too.

"I believe in your purpose baby,
coming up to the surface and maybe,
I'll never see you again,
then again.

You make me shiver,
hands will quiver,
I still have things that I want to give her.

But it's slow going,
something showing."

As our music tastes aren't exactly convergent I can only comment on 311. I really think they were great, but haven't heard too much to impress lately. Shame, really, as they had such a great sound and feel to their music.

Or at least they did something new at the time...took chances.
