Remember Netscape?  The one browser to rule them all that was oh-so-unfairly unseated by the big, bad, mean Microsoft's Internet Explorer.  Netscape has gone through a few rebirths, becoming the open-source Mozilla web browser, which then spun off Firefox.  AOL, recently reviving the Netscape brand, is basing the browser on the Firefox codebase.  Now, they're preparing the launch of version 9.0.

AOL posted a little teaser to the Netscape blog alluding to the upcoming release, though an AOL spokesperson has declined to confirm the blog post.

Could there possibly be any two words in the english language that are more vile than AOL and Netscape? Netscape was fair at best way back when. I used IE2 then on to 4 and would rather revert back to them than to give Netscape the time of day. Let's not even discuss AOL..

But it's still a fine job of journalistic sleuthing there Zoomba!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! NOT ONE MORE CRAPPY BROWSER TO SUPPORT! hehehehehe I totally agree with you Phoon. Netscape (a.k.a NutScrape) was never good.. Does anyone remember NS 4.x? Microsoft had nothing to do with that -- they lost user base on their own.

I had a client that was using Netscape mail from 4.6 (I think) up until a few years ago internally.  It was scarey to support.

I wonder if this signals the resurgence of Angelfire?

Other than a sentimental spot for the history of open source and Mozilla, way would anyone care about a new Netscape browser that was really just a Firefox knock off on a gecko engine with added bloat as only AOL can provide?

It is very informative about the history of Netscape browsers and what really happened to them. The presentation is by Mike Pinkerton and was recorded at the Open Source Speaker Series sponsored by Google. Mike is currently the team leader for Camino which is the Cocoa based Mozilla browser for Mac.

The presentation is fairly long but offers a real education into the open source world and its history.

DAMN,so then AOL,oops I meant aol is gonna get it's greasy virus infested claws into the FireFox, also? Figures, you just get comfortable with something a little comfortable and safer than IE and aol jumps on it!
