For those of you unfamiliar with this story, it is very interesting. Apparently a Cambodian woman, kidnapped by a feral man about 18 years ago, has been living in the jungles of Cambodia all that time. So much so, she has lost her capacity to speak languages, and is afraid of virtually her own shadow. It really caught my attention, and I have been following it. Her father, ever so grateful to have her back, is trying to get her back into society. What society? Let me quote a bit.
She has been living for a week in a village of the Phnong ethnic minority
Now she has become entranced by the family’s collection of DVDs. Like many poor rural Cambodians, they have enough money for an electrical generator and a DVD player.
Now dont get me wrong. I think it is great that anyone can afford a DVD player. But excuse me! I thougth the "poor" that could afford such luxuries were limited to the US (where of course a TV and Car are also in the pot - instead of a chicken). But the "rural poor" of Cambodia can afford generators and DVD players AND DVDs?
What is wrong with this picture? Seriously. if they can afford those things, are they really starving? Or in need of the basics of life? Someone please explain this to me.
