mods, custom ships, AI useability?

Kindof a basic question.
I'm new to galciv2. Downloaded and made-work the excellent NX01 and NCC-1701 ship-basis models.

Does the AI ever use these types of additions? Does the AI even build thier own ships, or just use the prefab ones?

Only if specifically modded to in most cases, IIRC. While the AI does design its own ships, that is limited to picking functional parts to put on them. It uses premade templates (hull+non-functional extras) to put those parts onto, since an AI can't intelligently design something to look nice.
