On checking the knitting forum I discovered it's a common rookie mistake and not just my stupidity.

I assume you have sorted it by now? you must take a picture and put it up to show us your handiwork - it does not have to be the finished article either - work in progress is just as good.

Yeah. I unraveled it and started over. Now that I know what I did wrong I can try again and make it even.

I think that you probably made the same mistake a lot of folks make and you mistook a loop between a stitch for an actual stitch and knitted it.  It's easy to do, especially if you're using a novelty yarn.

Your Dr Who scarf is in my knitting bag, wondering what it did to make me ignore it the way I have been.

I did the same thing (in a way) once while putting up tin on a roof of a barn. Somehow, some way I drifted just a fraction of an inch on one sheet and by the time I got to the end this fraction multipled until I was about four inches outta square! GAHHHHHH!!!! I pointed it out to my dad and he said "you'll be the only one that will ever notice it and so far he's been right. I DO notice it everytime.

Probably. I'm using a normal worsted weight yarn now, and taking my time and actually counting the stitches to make sure I don't magically add any.

I'm sure the holidays kept you quite busy. I have a whole new appreciation for what it takes to make something like that. I am nowhere near ready to attempt multiple colors. I can't even get a simple single color scarf to come out right yet. I'm trying a 2x2 ribbed scarf and have already frogged it three times because I wasn't happy with the stitches.

I understand completely. We are our own worse critics. And having a perfectionist personality doesn't help.

OOh, that's a bold move! Most people start out with garter stitch; you're mixing it up with knit AND purl! You're dangerous...and I like that!

I think that I have some instructions in the back of a couple of magazines. If I can find them, I'll rip out the patterns I want and then mail them to you.

Actually I started with just a garter stitch, but after the magical added stitches I decided to go with the 2x2 rib to force me to keep count of the stitches.

I've been working from online patterns, but would appreciate any printed ones ya care to send along. Thanks

Woo hoo! This is too cool!

After several botched and frogged attempts my 2x2 ribbed scarf is starting to come together for me. Admittedly I've only done a few rows so far, but they're rows without added/dropped stitches and are looking reasonably even.

Now that I have a few rows done I can see the pattern starting to reveal itself and it's just very cool to see. It's actually starting to look like something.

Maybe I can do this after all.
