Good news: hvy cell phone users may not be able to reproduce

Sorry, but I have to snicker a bit at the news here: Men who use mobile phones face increased risk of infertility

I'm thinking this means that in the future we'll have fewer and few morons running around with cell phones seemingly permanently attached to their heads as nature takes it's course and weeds out the gene pool a bit more. (Persons likely to make heavy use of cell phones prevent their own reproductive ability, thereby taking out the genes of those with similar tendencies from future generations).

I probably wouldn't be snickering so much at this thought if most cell phone users weren't so friggin' obnoxious with the darned things. I know it's not all, probably isn't even "most" users of cell phones, but a few bad ables go a long way to giving cell phone users a bad reputation. In anycase, I hope that the heaviest users of the phones keep it up until their reproductive organs fall off.

A few words from the original article referenced above:

Men who use mobile phones could be risking their fertility, warn researchers.

A new study shows a worrying link between poor sperm and the number of hours a day that a man uses his mobile phone.

Those who made calls on a mobile phone for more than four hours a day had the worst sperm counts and the poorest quality sperm, according to results released yest at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine annual meeting in New Orleans.

Doctors believe the damage could be caused by the electromagnetic radiation emitted by handsets or the heat they generate.

The findings suggest millions of men may encounter difficulties in fathering a child due to the widespread use of mobile phones and offers another possible explanation for plummeting fertility levels among British males.

Darn, as I read that, the article is only talking about British males.  I really hope the problem isn't limited to the U.K. as it's the morons in the U.S. I'm wishing the problems on.

Shame it only works on men.  "Fur sure!  Like Wow".

The Valley would die much quicker if it was an equal gender sterilizer.

It seems a bit odd this article.

The first of your articles I read Terp, you were griping about people calling you on your land-line while you were trying to take a nap. You referred to this land-line phone as "...a curse straight from hell", and that article bore the title of "The Phone is a Instrument of the Devil..."

Here you are wishing sterility on men who you believe "overuse" their cell phones.

It all seems a bit obsessive? What is the root of all this hatred for telephone communication?

What is the root of all this hatred for telephone communication?

That's easily answered:  I dislike the disruptions to my peace and serenity.

Cell phones are mis-used and abused by many (I'll try to be careful and not over generalize here and use the word "most" instead of "many") people that have them.  There are far too many people that use them constantly.  People that walk up and down aisles in grocery stores talking on them, people that stand in lines at Starbucks yakking away rather than giving the barista (and others in the lines) the common decency of their attention long enough to order, pay and confirm that they got what they ordered and didn't get over or undercharged for it.  People that walk around places like Best Buy, Sears, K-Mart, Wal*Mart or any number of other places yakking on the phone telling everyone around them their half of the gossip that they can't wait to share.  People that are driving on the interstate yakking away rather than paying attention to the task at hand (driving safely).  People that don't silence the phones in theatres, plays, and other similar places.  People that use their cell phones and take calls even as you are in the middle of an important conversation about work, or anything else -- implying that the person on the other end of the phone is far more important than those around them at the time.

Used correctly and sparingly, cell phones are great inventions.  Heck, used correctly and sparingly, cell phones probably have absolutely no ill effects on the users or those around them.  But used constantly and mercilessly, well then I have no qualms about thinking that the users deserve whatever ill effects they receive thanks to such usage.

On the earlier mentioned issue of phone calls (on landlines or other) disturbing people, well, it happens plenty frequently.  Sadly, the person on the other end of the phone doesn't know that they are disturbing you as they don't have a magic window in your life to know that you'll be sleeping or napping, or that you were just about to sit down and use the porcelain convenience, or that you just started cooking dinner or just finished cooking it and are ready to eat it before it gets cold.

Phones can be a nuisance and a great disturbance to an individuals calm.  When they are, well, that is what inspires my wrath.

Terp,

thanks for the reply. I must say of what you mentioned, I myself have experienced with regard to cell phones. Indeed they can be rude and disturbing.

One of the strangest social inovations that seems to have emerged with the cell, is the fact that people often expect you to answer their call immidiately, regardless of the "callies" circumstances.

So If I may add to your rant a message to those that call me expecting me to answer my phone when they call regardless of the current situatiion:

Please do not feel that because I have my phone with me, that I am obligated to answer the phone directly at the point of your call. Consider that I might be busy, or don't feel like talking on the phone, or I just dont want to talk to you in particular at the moment of your call.

When they are, well, that is what inspires my wrath.

Please, should I ever come close to envoking your wrath, let me know, as I value my fertile sperms and would hate for somebody to wish my little buddies sterile :)

So it messes up their reproduction?...I shudder to think how they're using those cell phones....maybe the vibrate function wasn't the best idea...
