Hawaii Rocked By Quake

A 6.6 earthquake rocked Hawaii today. All of the damage and injury reports aren't in yet but it is known that power is out on Oahu.

Luckily the quake didn't reult in a tsunami.

I wonder how many tourists had a rude awakening about 7:07 am local time this morning?

News so far is that it was just a shake rattle and roll.  Let's hope that is all it is.

Our seismograph at home picked it up. I'll post a scan of it later.

I just had a thought (I know, a rare event). Being as it was around 7:00am when the quake hit, I hope there weren't any guys there shaving with a straight razor right about then.

all the reports i've read say it was located closest to the big island, but like mason noted, it was strong enuff to kill the power elsewhere (including oahu). acording to the nyt, beth chapman (da dawg's wife) was outside at the time and saw a mini tsunami in her pool. nytimes coverage

6.5 is close enuff to the biggest quake i've experience (northridge, 6.7) which did a lotta damage not only out in the valley but on the other side of the 'hill' in santa monica. altho i'm about 60 miles from northridge and 40 from santa monica, power was out here for about 6 hours...and it shook hard enuff that i decided there was no sense getting outta bed and trying to protect myself cuz if it kept goin, the building was gonna collapse (wasn't til it got light outside that i realized whether or not the building remained standing, those two 7' bookcases against the wall 1.5' from the bed all loaded with what hadda been 1/4 ton of books coulda very easily turned me into pressed bee).

i'm also extremely concerned bout mizw and her boys so i'm really hoping they get power back on quickly so we can hear from her.

if it turns out she sustained even a tiny scratch but beth chapman was spared, it'll be just one more proof there's not only no justice but also noone's at the switch.

I just heard the news having been out most of the day. I immediately thought of Tex and her boys too. I hope they're ok.

Hey guys. We just got power on. Apparently my children would NOT have survived back in the olden days. LOL.

The quake did a lot of damage on the Big Island, but so far it sounds like no casualties.

I did feel the earthquake. I was up and (where else?) at the computer and it felt like my chair was going to fall over. It was a really weird feeling, like the house was shifting or something. We still had power for a few minutes, then it went out.

Other than no power (and spotty phone service), everything's fine here. I don't think there was any damage on Oahu. If there was, it was VERY minimal. I think even Maui didn't have much in the way of damage.

Annnnyways, thank you guys for caring about us. We are just fine.

(And apparently I grilled some excellent ribs at lunch!)

i'm so glad you're okay jaina.

i read some comments from people in highrises in waikiki and figured if they hadn't tumbled, you were very likely safe. but...

i was sittin right here when the last two substantial quakes (since northridge) hit. one was strong enuff to knock a train off the tracks out in the desert where it happened so it was pretty big but lasted only about 10 seconds (altho it seemed to me much longer than that). felt very similar to being in a large boat in fairly rough seas.

Yeah, considering the magnitude, the state is VERY lucky. Really here on Oahu it was more an inconvenience than anything.

I have a hard time even knowing how to describe it. It felt like the shaking was coming from above instead of from the ground, which was weird. I didn't know what the hell it was, but when it stopped, I ran upstairs to check on the boys.

I actually briefly thought maybe it was something either they or my mom was doing upstairs.

There were several aftershocks and I didn't feel any of those.

I think I would have been really scared if I'd been as close to the action as you were with the CA earthquakes.

BTW, I just gotta send you a pic of me in my Jaina shirt. I really did have one made. LOL.
