Here we go again - now it's the lettuce!

What the heck is going on out there in vegetable land? First the Spinach had ecoli, now the lettuces might be contiminated too?

I've not eaten any Spinach recently and have been eating lettuces. I also buy the California ones too because that's the kind the big W carries!

What's a person to do if you can't rely on these growers to keep your vegetables safe?


I guess it's mustard greens and kales all around for a while.

What the heck does he mean there's generic E. Coli on it?!!!???? Now, now they're being 'extra careful'???!!!!


AND I forgot to mention in my blog, watch out for bottled carrot juice and also ground beef! What are these people trying to do us?

Well, the upside is at this rate, I'll really lose some weight!!

Okay I do not want to sound stupid but I have to ask the question, is it at all possible this contamination could be done by terrorists? poison the food supply poison (will not kill many but could cause some hospital chaos) the people?

No, it's not a stupid question and you're not being paranoid, that can happen. Thankfully I don't think it is but who knows! They are so devious, and all it takes is one small thing to sabotage us.

okay okay I am probably being paranoid!

No, not paranoid, as I guess we have all thought of that.  But a very lame attempt.  The Spinach has been conclusively linked to 2 deaths (3 maybe).  If they wanted to terrorize us, they would have planted bombs in Football stadiums!

Canned food is still good, and Lettuce is just a garnish.  At least I can still eat me spinach from a can!

And Forever, You can have my Mustard Greens and Kale! Blecchh!  Ooogiie!

It kind of makes sense now that they are looking at the water. After all, if all these different vegetables suddenly are contaminated, there must be a common problem. If they are all irrigating from the same water source...

Re: terrorism, there was a cult back in the 70's or 80's that put feces and water in spray bottles and hit salad bars around the northwest. If I recall someone died from e. coli from that.

I remember that, but like you, dont recall their idiotic name. Like the Tylenol thing of the early 80s. I doubt terrorist, just a bunch of idiots.

As a matter of interest, when we lived in various African countries we were told never to buy lettuce on the street (or any other leaf crop). That is because the crops are often
irrigated using night soil (sewage) or polluted river water. E-coli was only one of many dangerous bacteria found in those leaf crops. Many uninformed buyers
of these crops went down with hepatitis, typhoid, cholera (causing deaths or long stays in hospital) or, if you were "luckier", violent diarrhoea that could last a week!

We thought the same too. Now that I'm thinking about it though Doc, isn't that the way they begin, on a small scale, see what works best?! I might just be watching to much tv!!

Very good warning to follow Adnauseam. I just can't understand why farmers would use irrigated water? HOW is that good for human consumption?! Sometiems I feel that no matter how much I wash my veggies, they are still contaminated with the gunk used to grow them! That's just not acceptable!
