WTF Is Wrong With People?

You're seeing the results of the numbers of people that don't pay attention to news and apparently don't have friends that pay attention to it either.

I could insert some terribly insensitive comments here about how it's mother nature's payback for eating raw veggies, but hey...

Seriously though, it's a sad situation and one which shouldn't be continuing, but you've seen the same news I have and apparently a bunch of people haven't been paying attention.

Personally I'm glad I'm not a vegetarian and that I over-cook just about all vegetables that I'm going to eat. I never much cared for raw veggies, especially raw greens (other than lettuce occassionally), and what few veggies I do eat I want *done* before eating them.

Yeah, maybe the whole ignorance is bliss thing isn't all it's cracked up to be.

It makes me sad that all my blessed leafy greens are off-limits. I miss my fresh baby spinach salad . . . thank goodness my spinach starts need about another week and they'll be ready to eat . . . yum.

On topic: negligent homicide sounds like a nice charge to be brought against these people . . .

Does anyone know how the E. coli got in the spinach anyway? I thought E. coli was an intestinal bacteria. Which I now shudder to think how all that spinach became contaminated.

I don't know, but I do know that in Europe "human fertilizer" isn't a rare thing. I wonder if someone here in the states was sticking to the ways of "the old country" ;~D

Fertilizer (the bovine variety will suffice) or tainted ground water, most likely.

Treated human waste has actually been approved by the FDA for certain crops. (I don't think that includes crops for human consumption, but who knows what those wacky feds will do next.) We had a big controversy about it out here in Mohave County, AZ a while back.

They're still investigating that. I suspect someone was probably using liquified pig excrement for fertilizer which is not uncommon but not supposed to be used of this type of crop. But that's just a guess on my part and probably not the case.

Yes, but as you indicated not for human consumption, Even animal waste is not allowed for leafy, direct contact type crops such as spinach due to the risk of exactly this sort of contamination.

On the other side. Maybe the child was sick before it was publicized. The horrible thing is they wait until they see what is going to cost more and how many people get sick before it is brought to the attention.

I honestly hadn't thought of that. Perhaps he had eaten the spinach prior to all of this hitting the news and it just took this long for it to get that bad. Very good point.

There have been no reported cases here in Va, but stores are pulling it and most people (there are exceptions) are tossing it. I love spinach, but not that much!

I was hoping that it was something along the lines of what Kelly was saying--that the child ate the contaminated spinach before anyone was made aware of it.

It's been all over the news here too. I don't see any Spinach anywhere right now. I'm glad I stopped buying those ready bag vegetables. I used to once upon a time but stopped when the same thing happened with the lettuce about two years ago.

All the spinach at my university is gone...even the "spinach salad" has no spinach in it...

You gotta think kids are enjoying this all over the country...and Popeye won't be himself for awhile, unless he's still got canned spinach from the 1950's.
