Why Would Anybody PAY for Kittens?

I subscribe to a freecycle group for our area. For those unfamiliar with the concept, freecycle is basically where you post the junk you're giving away in the hopes that someone will peruse the page and decide they need it. It's kinda like a trailer trash version of craigslist.

Sometimes the postings get a little surreal. I have seen people posts requests for beds, cars, outbuildings, and even houses, expecting other people to just hand them over. But our freecycle group is fairly inactive, with the most frequent posts coming from the lady with the most fertile cats on the planet posting ads for free kittens on a regular basis.

This begs the question: why would anybody actually pay for a cat anyway? Sure, you'd pay for shots, spaying, and neutering, etc, but actually paying for a cat seems nonsensical, except in the rare instances where you are looking for a specific breed. With the proliferation of cats out there, it seems the idea of actually purchasing one is a fairly ludicrous proposition.

Heh, heh...JU would crash in an hour with all that traffic.


I don't think I've ever paid for a cat....nope...the only thing that costs anything is either feeding it or the rare instances when I take it to get a rabies shot.

No...I've never paid for a cat...and like you, Gid, I can't imagine why anyone would pay for one. Who cares if your cat is purebred.

For that matter, I can't imagine why anyone would pay for a dog either. Purebreds seem to have so many problems. All my family has EVER had are mutts that we've gotten for free somewhere, and to tell you the truth, they've been wonderful dogs.

Oh...I guess I have to eat words...as I'm typing I'm realizing that I *DID* pay for my cat. We got her from the humane society and paid $50 for her...she was spayed, had her shots, and also had a check up with the vet.

I would pay for a dog from the humane society, too. I think that's worth it.

I paid for mine. I didn't set out to actully buy one. I just kinda ran across him and we hit it off.

If I were to set out to get one I would go to the animal shelter first.

Sometimes the places that give them up use the money they get to care for the place and the other animals that they have. If it's an individual though...I don't know?
