B5 Hull Choices

suddenly spoilt for choice

Having received over 100 model imports from Voltron in the past few weeks, I now have the luxury of choosing between different versions of hulls. The next release of the mod (which I am chasing down some ctd bugs on atm!) will have the Anla'Shok (Rangers) as the next new race and most fleets will be further fleshed out.

I am thinking of significantly scaling down some of the models. Scale in the combat viewer is cool (and is related to the model filenames anyway right?!) but it really gets me that some of the ships aren't a nice size in the shipyard. I think that some compromises on relative model sizes need to be made. Would be very interested in any feedback on this as the scaling in the game is still a bit of a grey area in my mind

Anyway, the one I am really having problems deciding on is the Centauri Vorchan:

The second one, it looks 'thicker'!

Any first one ships amongst the ones Voltron imported? The EA Poisedon, even if it isnt canon, would be cool and i am sure there is a model of it somewhere.

In some other thread you said something about giving the fighters a defensive bonus or something? I think this is impossible to add to the the actual hull components, and why do you want to anyway?

Just remember that picking the higher poly model (2) can make a big difference in how the game will perform as well.

The first one looks brighter and better, even if the second one has more polygons.

Definitely the first one.

The first one. Centauri Ships are sleek and elegant. The second one looks too "bulky".

yes,definitely the first one

Second one strikes me as blurry. Go with the first.

I like the color and crispness of the first one so it gets my vote
but if you could add the smoother wing of the second one that would really ice the cake

So I think I'll go with the first one

I have chosen to go mostly with Voltron's new models for 0.4, mainly to give everyone a chance to get a feel for the different styles. There are only a few, like the Vorchan, that are much different. Most are just retextured or rescaled. I really hope that I am in no way offending Coplann, Vorlone or Robalis! Hi guys! There is no way the mod would ever have been created without their efforts and like I said - most of the models are using the same meshes anyway.

Finally have found a plugin that imports .X files as well as exports them so I can play with scales etc as much as I like now. Final file sizes seem to depend on how well the particular model works with the particular exporter. The import / export one can be found here. The only other good one is the Panda exporter right?

giving the fighters a defensive bonus or something... why do you want to anyway?

Yeah it was a bit of wishfull thinking to assume I could just add a defensive point to the actual hulls. The best idea I have at the moment is to remove the sizemod from weapons (or make it really small) and apply quite a large sizemod to defenses. This would make defenses much more effective in fighters than capitals. Makes sense to me, it should take up all that extra space to defend a larger ship. Maybe the same for engines but give mediums a speed boost so that they stay current throughout the game.

The reason I want to give fighters a defensive bonus and capitals an attacking bonus is because it is the only way to get a carrier-type thing happening. If a fleet is made of high-defence fighters and a high-attack capital, then fire will be focused on the capital while the fighters rip it up. Also means that fighters hopefully remain more useful late game. I am very keen to see what the ai does with all these changes - will have a better idea by the end of the day.
