September 12th is set as another major launch date for new and exciting Apple products with the start of the Apple Expo in Paris.  Much like the recent WWDC focused on software and cool hardware for developers, the Apple Expo looks to be the platform to launch some new consumer-focused products.  The big announcement expected next Tuesday however won't take place in the city of love, but in San Francisco.  Speculation currently holds that Apple will be announcing a new movie download service via their iTunes Music Store, selling movies formatted for the Video iPod.  This new service would closely resemble the television episodes Apple has been adding to iTunes in recent months.

Currently, Apple is said to be in talks with major movie studios, but disagreements over price, terms and distribution are slowing progress.  At the moment, the only studio that is assumed to be ready to go is Disney, a company that has become closely tied to Apple and iTunes.  Jobs joined the Disney board of directors earlier this year when Disney acquired Pixar Animation Studios.

In related news, some expect Amazon to launch its own digital download service for feature films later this week.  Amazon is said to have reached agreements with several of the major studios Apple is still attempting court.

I can understand TV shows - it's nice to listen to The Daily Show while riding to work (though even that is kinda reaching IMHO), but why would anyone want to buy movies for iPod?? What joy is there to watch a movie on what, a 3x4 screen, maybe less, listening to it through headphones while still hearing all the noise outside? Oh yeah I'm sure Spiderman would look really awesome in all its tiny noisy glory

I have watched quite a few movies,tv shows, and what have you on my iPod while on my commute to work. Granted, it's not the greatest screen for long viewing but for 15 - 30 minutes, it's not bad and it does help the commute go by more quickly. Yes, you lose a lot of the detail but don't knock it till you've tried for awhile. I bitched too at first, but it's better than nothing and remember, the iPod was built for music first, video second. What I don't understand is why you would pay for a movie download? Buy the DVD, and then just rip it to the iPod format using Videora iPod Converter. 2 for the price of one. Videora iPod Converter is a free program and it gets the job done well with quite a large number of movie formats to choose from.

I finally bit the bullet about 6 months ago and purchased a 30 GB iPod video unit.

I am not sure how much I would watch videos, but being able to place 14+ GB of music on one little handheld is just fabulous. Jogging, walking, and workouts will never be the same again.

Apple definitely did things right with the iPod - IMO.

i don't mean to be a **** Apple, but welcome to last year with my archos gmini402...which even comes with software to convert prexisting avi's an such to a viewable format on the device

Well technically it's not about "movies on the iPod", as converting movie files to iPod's format was possible before, it's about movies on iTunes... and I personally don't think there is a large market for that.
