We're in the process of re-designing WinCustomize.com for the new 2007 edition.

Here are a few features that will be in it:

  1. For subscribers: It'll be skinnable.
  2. Much faster overall (see forums for a taste)
  3. Much lighter (lot less graphical content in the design)
  4. Skinners with Master access or higher will be able to optionally sell skins and themes (giving an incentive for classic skinners to keep making new stuff and an incentive for up and coming skinners to release lots of good free stuff to move up -- subscribers will get at least 25% off the price)
  5. A simpler UI to get to things more easily.
  6. More galleries
  7. Featured Skinner section
  8. Skinner forum

But what are some things you would like to see? What things of the current site do you like and would like preserved? What things about the current site that you don't like would you like changed or removed? What things from other sites would you like to see added?

I am a total newbie to object desktop and skinning. On the other hand I am a frequent photoshop user and am very intersted in throwing myself face first into skinning as a hobby. I would appreciate a skinning 101 section with articles and tutorials about getting started in skinning. maybe a more advanced section for those who want it.
Anything that will help steer people new to object desktop and wincustomize in the right directions.

Sounds good and intriguing.

I'd like to see skinners' personal pages structure revamped so that they can be more customizable and better personalized.

1. Private Messages (as everyone has already said)
2. Make this site functional with the Opera Broswer (thanks for pointed that out aimzzz): I have to get on via FF which means i'm always using 2 browsers to get in.
3. Make "polls" optional, not at every startup
4. Rating system needs to be changed, I've done over 100 SS's and when i dl someone's icons or what not, I'ld like to have my share of encouragement in the vote. Or else, just get rid of it, no one really cares, we can tell if people like it by the amount of DL's they have
5. Premium suites (as already mentioned by most).
6. Favorites. I love DA for this, I can chart who and what I like and keep tabs of it very easily.
7. Versatility in the forums. Being a member here for a year now and haven't made it to but 1/2 dozen forums -at best- b/c they are so difficult to find EXACTLY what you're looking for.
8. Add: NEW PRODUCTS section(s) as well as more Galleries (suggestions: Rainmeter, true launch bar, VS, styler, Ave., etc)
9. More benefits for subscribers like me who really don't see any added benefits of being one

I think we could roll desktop gadgets into wc now, allowing free and for sale gadgets on wc would help.

I like the PM idea, as its hard sometimes to get a hold of some people, with so much dang SPAM in email, this might help.

I agree that the rating system needs worked on. My opinion is that if you had to have your nick associated with your rating it would keep people from slamming others ratings just to be jerks.

I like to visit main page first, but others may prefer to see other area first, like skins, forums, or whatever.

How about this:

"Make this page my main page" feature. Basically, if you go to your skins page and click this, next time you visit https://www.wincustomize.com it will go to your skins page as main page.

With this tagging we could set our preferences to only show us skins that were made version 4+ or 5, etc.

I've been lobbying for this one for some time now. Hopefully, it is being considered.

The forums have definitely improved in performance, so if the balance of the site performs that well, we are certainly in for a treat. Especially the ability to skin it.

I would like the Newest Skins section to be sorted/seperated somehow. I would like to see WB, DX themes, DX Objects, Widgets, and IP all in their own newest gallery. The reasoning behind this, is there are so many BootSkins, ScreenShots, Wallpapers, and Icons that get loaded liberally. Whereas the others are more conservative uploads. It would just be more convienant...to me anyway.

Wincustomize is missing the most important thing, a decent search function. I would hope that would be your focus on any upgrades. Let me give you an example I just ran into. I am looking for a sysmetrix skin that was designed for the right corner. I put in right corner, right, and corner but got only a couple of hits. I went to deviant art and got more than a dozen hits so I just assumed deviant has more sysmetrix skins than wincustomize.

Today I saw a screenshot of someone using a nice right corner sysmetrix skin. They were nice enough to give me the name 'crux'. Lo and behold crux is right here at wincustomize and didn't show up in my search. And the words 'right corner' are in the description! Why didn't search pick that up? A decent search function is the most important part of any community and wincutomize is lacking it. So I would ask that the basics be looked after before the bells and whistles. Improve the search or farm it out to google if necessary.

You just need to go to the Gallery and select the Sysmetrix section and type crux in the search box. Hit go and voila there you have it. WWW Link. Just a matter of getting used to the search function.

Sorry, you misunderstand. Anyone (even my 8 yr old cousin) can find a skin once they have a title. The point I am making is that it doesn't show up when I:

Lo and behold crux is right here at wincustomize and didn't show up in my search. And the words 'right corner' are in the description!


Go ahead, give it a try. Put in corner, right, or right corner in the sysmetrix library. Then put in crux and read the description. To spell it out, the search here doesn't index descriptions or, if it does, I am missing a section in 'advanced search' which only shows me category headings. Now do you see what I mean?

I think searching is all about the GIGO concept.  If, for example it's simplistic of an engine to search via 'skin title' only then you really have to ask yourself...."if a person cannot search via title because he does not know it then how much more likely is he to know an extract of a description of that forgotten title?"

The latter, surely is going to be of use/necessity far less than the title would be...

That was tounge-in-cheek, right Jafo? Because if you're serious, well then don't be ridiculous. I mean let me start a list of things users here would (and if you check the logs I will bet that have) searched for that would not appear in a title and they would not find:

1) black in the windblinds library
2) transparancy in any library

If you don't get it why not try this. I saw a wallpaper that featured a ladybug and the ladybug was in the description but not in the title. Go find it.

Now try that same search at deviant

I could go on all day. I mean, look, lets be real here. You want to charge people a subscription and your search is one of the poorest on the internet? Every other skin site I visit be it deviant, konfab, samurize, etc all have a decent search (more than a single field search). This site is the only one thats so poor that a freshman in a CS course could do better. And this is the site that supposed to support my $65 purchase of software? Yet other free products have support sites that have a decent search? So is that too much to ask that any "upgrades" include a search that took more a teenager to code? Geeze.

I think wincustomize is fine just the way it is. Id like to see it more "Firefox Friendly" especially in the forums. maybe like i posted in a different article about maybe adding a creative mediasource skins library. but overall i think Wincustomize is fine.

i think there should be a section for cell phones, ipods, messengers, etc... any of those.
