does this change?

Currently i'm playing on a large map, abudant habital planets, stars etc. with 5 computerplayers. I've build lasers first, then went al the way to photon torpedos. The computers however still counter my lasers but not my missles. Which of course is a good thing as i'm ripping them apart. The Ai ships all got lasers (plasma weapons etc.) so I use shields. My ships are nearly indestructable as a result. Mostly I combine weapons (8 laser 10 missle so forth). This tactic seems to work well.

Question is will the AI pick up on this. Will they combine weapons and/or defences? If not war is going to be very easy i guess.

What difficulty? The AI has never adapted to me on Normal, but will do so on Intelligent and above.

I'd have thought that mixing weapons is not the way to go. Because of the way that damage is calculated, you should be able to do more damage with all weapons of the same type. If you really want to keep the computer guessing, build seperate ships with all missile/all beam attack.

Obviously, it's working out for you, but think how much better off you'd be with all missile ships, making their defenses even more worthless...

Personally, I stick with a single weapon branch so as to maximise research potential. Better to have one very powerful type of weapon than two mediocre ones. If the computer adapts, buy the best weapon of another type from one of the other AIs.

The AI should be smart enough to find a solution for this way, too! Get the third weapon.
