Custom Racial Abilities

How Can I Set Them?

Hello,
After several months of absence from GalCiv II, I had finally resolved to return to the game. However, after patching, I found my custom races/saves erased. Not too much of a problem, I figured. I recalled most of the stats of my old race, and had finished most of my old games anyway (never really bothered with the campaign). Unfortunately, upon attempting to start a new (normal game) and recreate my old race, I encountered a bit of a problem; namely that I could not modify the "racial abilities" of my custom race, preventing me from personally selecting the attributes best suited to my playstyle. Cany anyone explain to me how I may change the "Racial Abilities" of a custom race?

You should be able to customize them just as with any other race. The only things you can't change are an inherent bonus to Loyalty and Soldering (like the Yor's Miniturization bonus), other than that you should be able to spend your ability points freely.

Couldn't you change the inherent racial bonuses in the previous versions? The bonuses to logistics, loyalty, and soldiering give me only 10 points to spend! Is there anyway or any tool with which to modify this?

Sure, just make a copy of the RaceConfig.xml found at GalCiv2\Data\English\, update the copy with whatever values you want in the Custom Race entry and stick it into a mod folder in the \MyModFolder\Data\ folder. This of course can't be used for Metaverse games, but I don't bother with all of that anyway.

Check out CariElf's modding guide for more details or ask away!

Not within the game, no. Races have never had more than 10 points available to spend, aside from bugs.

Not the hardcoded "extra" bonuses that don't go away when you click the reset button.

There is a way to get different sets of hardcoded bonuses, though, based on the other races' profiles.

For example, if you want to start with inherent bonuses for trade and diplomacy, first start a game as the Terran Alliance. Change the abilities, etc. all you want. Start a game, then quit.

Next, start a new game and choose the custom race. On the screen where you change the abilities, click the Load button at the bottom. You get a dialog of all of the raceconfig files that you have in your My Games folder. Pick the Terran Alliance (or whatever you renamed the Terrans to be). Voila, you're playing a custom race with the Terran bonuses. Don't forget to spend your unused tech points before you go on to opponent selection!

It's not complete customization, because you are still stuck with the inherent abilities found in the established races, but it's better than always having loyalty and soldiering; and you start with the alignment leaning that the original race had, so you don't need to start at neutral.

I sometimes use this to play as an offshoot of a major race while still having that race in the galaxy. I have a game going now as the Black Drath, for instance.

I've finally finished my first game (wee diplo victory) and I noticed that when I went to start a new game and reused my race, I had a +6% logistics bonus. I'm a tweaked terran and don't see the logistics bonus listed anywhere in the abilities screen, and I'm 99% sure base terrans don't get it (could be wrong, don't want to risk hitting a reset and losing it). Is there a bonus from somewhere else?
