HELP PLEASE - Trouble colonizing

Hi. I'm new to this game. I've searched this forum extensivly and cannot find an answer to this problem.

When I have a colonising ship floating about in space, I select it, then right click on what appears to be a hospitable planet (it looks 'earth-like'), yet the colonising ship gets close to the planet, then stops. It does not colonise it.

What am I doing wrong? This is driving me crazy.

Don't bother with looks. First click on the planet to see what class it is (you can't colonise class 0) and then check to see if anyone else has colonised it first. If not, and it's above class 0, then you can colonise.

Another way to do it is too zoom right out, uncolonised planets show their class through ringed circles. Thicker rings= better planets.
