Why did the beta close?

I would certainly still like to be able to buy GC now and get access to the pre-release beta builds...

I don't understand what the reasoning behind the decision to close the beta was. Can some1 explain?

With the game this close to release, there's not much to be gained by getting the beta. It would just taint the player's experience. Better to wait for the final version which is only a month away.
