Firefox 2.0 Theme Revealed

Who says OSS can't look good?

http://wiki.mozilla.org/FX2_Visual_Update/Default_Theme_Update

Yesterday, early mockups of the new UI for the 2.0 release of the popular web browser, Mozilla Firefox, were posted to the Mozilla wiki.  Three vendors (Radiant Core, Meta and Raiz Labs) submitted proposals for the new theme, with Radiant Core winning out with their design.

The requirements for the new theme were simple:

  • respect OS native look and feel
  • appear modern and contemporary with current web and client apps
  • appear consistent across platforms
  • have minimum to zero code impact requirements (ie: all CSS and icon work)

You can see screenshots of the new visual elements on the Mozilla wiki page.

So, now it looks just like Opera. Way to go.

I like the new look. The tabs remind me way to much of Opera (from what I remember anyway ) but they do look great. Everything seems alot more glossy and shadowed which is nice. I imagine this would look GREAT with the WMC Royale visual theme. I liked the "go" buttons (at the end of URL, and Search bars) better when they were seperate, however. The glow effect on RSS is nice .

Good job to team Radiant Core for being selected .

To bad there was no preview of the other 2 teams designs .

(Also, couldn't this pretty much be achieved with a skin on FF 1.5 )

Button-Icons are still ugly... Standard with a glare. So what ?

Who really cares what it looks like?  Aren't we all just going to skin it anyway?    I know I am...

I didn't think it was that much of an improvement...

I like how the browser window is a screenshot of OSX and the border is Windows.

oh wait. I see it now. That also explains the odd anti-aliasing of the text in the screenshot.

Well, all I can say is: hooray for skinning!
