Firefighters deserve even more praise...

I spent 6 hours today, drilling on my ship. Not an uncommon thing supposedly... but I spent today on the fire fighting team. I'm required to put on the boots, flash gear (gloves and neck/face guard) mask, SCBA tanks, and the dreaded FFE...

The FFE is a full body, fire resistant insulation suit, meant to act as a wearable sauna; of at least this is what it feels like when you wear it. It's actually pretty comfortable other than the temperatures your body reaches when wearing it.

I wore it only for the 6 hours or so today... I can't imagine how bad it can get for Firefighters who wear it into actual fires, even though I know they are glad to have it protecting them.. It's just a pain to wear in normal 'practice' situations because of the ungodly heat.

So hats off to you Firefighters of the world. You all deserve even more praise for putting up with wearing that damned life saving suit!

Ah yes, I remember the firefighting training. It was an excellent learning experience and came in handy a few times aboard ship. And I agree, those guys deserve all the cudos they can get.

When I was writing this I wished I could put more words into it.. but I decided to stick to the original FFE theme... I think I'm still sweating....
