Projects, Projects and MS Project

A day in the life of a student

Well, I'm working on three different projects for this semester. I'm not sure if anytning is getting done any faster now that I'm sort of laid up by knee surgery.
The first is on the nurse faculty shortage. While there is a very real nursing shortage, it isn't helped much by the shortage of qualified nursing instructors.

Why is that you ask? I'm glad you asked. There are so few nurses actually seeking advanced degrees, many are quite satisfied at obtaining their Associates Degree in Nursing, after all this is all they need to become a Registered Nurse. If they go for the Bachelors Degree in nursing that is as far as most attempt to obtain, not that it really gets a nurse any true recognition. Even those in mangement positions don't have advanced degrees, MSN or PhD. So, why would anyone go for an advanced nursing degree. Well it depends on their goals. Those who go into adminstration are looking to advance the role of nurses. Those who obtain the Nurse Practioner role want to provide better patient care (did you know that a Physician's Assistant has less training than most Registered Nurses). Those who become Clinical Nurse Specialists become the nurse specialists in their facilities, usually a hospital. Lastly the nurse informatician is the computer and technology specialist.

Any of these positions do far better with less added stress than the nurse instructor, who is expected to teach students, perform research (and publish articles concerning their research project), and in service roles. They are bound by rules and regulations from the Board of Nursing to the College/University to the department that they work. All this for usually less than a hospital nurse makes in salary / year. There are federal and state loan programs being offered to encourage nurses to choose faculty nursing as a career.

My next project is a group project, of course there is only one other in my group, and we are working on a patient log book for a speciality floor for one of the Atlanta area hospitals. This is the informatics class. The idea is to track the most observed diagnoses, the physicians admitting to that floor, and the discharge location of a patient. We are working with MS Project and MS Access. We are working this as if it were a real software consulting project, and it's a blast. The biggest part of the work is data entry, since none of the info has been put in the computer previously.

Well, the third projcet is a systems research project. We are taking a specific group, diagnosis, or other. After collecting info we are to put together a paper with the results. Some of the class will be using MS Visio, however I won't get that privilege this time around.

Well that is all for today. Let's see how far I get before this is all due and I'll put an update.
