If this were a matter of simple crime and punishment, like a death penalty case here in America, I'd agree with you. But this is a matter of military operations, and they are conducted with the prospect of reducing or eliminating the enemy's will and/or ability to continue the fight. I applaud his death in the "you can run but you can't hide" sense, but it's not enough. People of his ilk are the ones who will continue the fight outside Iraq, and that's why I actually support the cease fire offer that the secular/nationalist insurgent organizations have made. Iraq is increasingly unpopular at home. Within the next two years, troops will be coming home. And I think the 2006 and 2008 elections will see the emergence of more withdrawal sentiment among politicians. By January 2009, i think most American troops will be out. If we are planning on being out by then, why not take the deal? We could end attacks against American troops by these groups, AND enlist the help of these groups in killing the jihadists in the country. I don't think they'd make the offer if they weren't in a precarious position themselves. They're afraid of the Shiites death squads getting them, and probably fearful of Salafists or Shiite theocracy.

Of course, we'd need them to prove they'd stop attack against us. We could have them seriously attack the jihadists to prove they're being honest.

Got part of my foot blown off driving over a mine, lost most of my hearing in my left ear, suffered some burns on my legs and a graze wound from rifle fire. But other than that, I'm fine. We could not fight a counter-insurgency indefinitely, with all our white male population called up for duty (and many of our black compatriots who fought with us too) while we were under embargo. The enemy received extenesive support from the Soviets, Chinese, and North Koreans. We were badly outnumbered and still killed about 25 for every one we lost. And for this silliness about "racism", that's what the enemy was fighting for. A country free of whites. Whites had lived in Rhodesia for about as long as the Bantu. Look at Zimbabwe now. That's exactly what we said would happen if Nkomo and Mugabe won. We were right.

The counter-insurgency didn't fail. We just could not continue the fight any longer. It was a war of attrition. They could keep throwing bodies and material at us. We were thrown to the wolves by our allies. South Africa got to live while we were given the noose.

I have struggled with that
Believe me I have.

In one case I believe the borders should be closed ... after all a ghanian, a chinese, a japanese
national cannot get here until they land on an airport and are stamped by INS.

But then again the struggle for me is the realization that a war was fought to take that land
from Mexico ... some of those crossing the border feel they arent going into a foreign country
but into another part of their neighborhood.

My solution is:
post guards on every inch of the border (every INCH)
grant citizenship to every one already here (after all we do that to cuban citizens that make
it to Florida) and we do need workers to keep SS running
NO MORE WELFARE ... or social programs after the 1st kid ... and no free program while there is
an able bodied adult at that residence.

I have gotten groups of people together to push our two senators ... but nothing so far ...
Its a political hot potato with these so called "elected leaders"

Arabs have a 1400 year track record of trying to conquer infidels. The first contact Arabs had with Europeans wasn't during the Crusades, fool. In a few decades, some other ideology, like secular nationalism, will take over when the Arab Islamic peoples fail again.
