Beta 5 Notes

From a playability standpoint, Beta 5 should be a huge step forward over beta 4.

Amongst the new stuff:
+ There is a new way of doing invasions. You get a choice of different tactics which have their own pros and cons.

This is going to be altered where tactics come attached to different technologies. Right now for testing you get all of them right away. I personally love this new feature even though I had nothing to do with it. ;)

+ A ton of work on the Diplomacy

It's still flaky and indeed may have some serious problem still. But you should find the AI much more intelligent in handling diplomacy. The make peace with other player is now in there and works. The AI should sound a lot more intelligent now than previously.

+ A ton of work on the AI itself

Several new AI personalities. Each race now has their own unique style of play. You should find the AI to be much MUCH more intelligent than previously. Particularly tactically.

+ Spelling and grammar. Hopefully you'll find the typos largely gone.

+ Lots of new UP issues, events, and more.

+ We have fixed a lot of slow down issues that were reported, particularly late game stuff. Big thanks to people woh sent in their saved games. Those late game saved games make a HUGE difference to us. We're still working on making this even better.

+ Lots of crash bugs. That said, there are still more in there. The game crashed on me moements before i upoaded it. ;)

What's next:

There will probably be a Beta 5A on Monday and that will be the lsat public build until we go into gamma barring some huge problem being discovered. There is a LOT of multimedia not included in the betas (which is why there are no images for a lot of stuff in the betas).

We have a few surprises that will be in the gamma and 1.0 that I won't talk about but we think you'll really like them.

Let us know how the game is. My biggest worry is getting all the stuff up there correctly. There's so much that changed over beta 4 that it's easy to miss a file or something.

What we want to know: How do you like the game? We're nearing the end of our journey for 1.0. New ideas can go into a GalCiv 1.1 thread. We're very pleased with how the game is turning out and have committed to many months of added feature development for you guys regardless of sales (heck, even if GalCiv sold 0 copies it would have little impact on us, 90% of our revenue comes from Object Desktop related stuff even figuring in a successful release of GalCiv that won't change much).

Have fun! I'll give you a hint at some of the surprises:

The AI text will change sometimes based on the time of day you're playing (not in beta 5 but in the release).

What time did Beta 5 go onto the libraries accessable from the DGM? I tried first with the Stardock Centrol but when it failed I tried with the DGM (at about 10:30 EST). Would I have gotten a mixed up intall (again)?

I guess I got my answer when I played the game. It seems to work quite well (except the continued problem with the sounds of the menu doors opening and the sounds on the first time events (choppy, like before, and already commented on by Brad).
