New Player with Questions

Giving and Letting up

A couple of quick questions from a new player . . . 1. A squirrel civilization, minor race, befriended my Terran Alliance group recently in a game I am playing and after a while, I kind of tried to protect their little one world race. The Drengen came in and bullied them and they sent me a distress call of "Help help" basically. So, I traded them two Medium Cruisers for free in hoped they would use them to defend their one home planet. The two ships sat outside Earth and Mar's orbit for the rest of the game and didnt move nor were they used? What gives? Did I do something wrong or were they just stupid? 2. Later in the same game, I allied with the Borg Collective of Evil Droids (can't remember races' name at present) and they were attacked later on by the Alterans (sp?). I decided to get involved and smashed at least 4 planets away from the invaders that were closest to me. The war raged on and the Alterans were crushed on three fronts like sharks on the Frenzy. I could continue the pillaging on my end by wondered if I should let us and make peace as I am not trying to destroy the whole galaxy like a Buzzard in this Scenario. My question is, what are the goods and bads to continueing to obliterate a Race and all their planets, as I know I can, but it would take me another 20+ weeks of ship pumpage and troop landings? Thanks guys!

1. Good old squirrels! i use their picture for my custom race. however, they were probably just stupid, the minor races dont really have much AI. sometimes even the full races take a few turns to decide to do something with some free ships.

2. Goods - you get all their planets, of course! also take over their resources, and get a few techs when you conquer thir planets.

2. Bads - takes a bit of effort, and may affect your relations with other civs, they may get a bit worried.

3. Welcome to the forums!

One possible reason why the minor race did not use your ships was that the ships were out of their range. It helps if you move the ships as close to their world as possible before you give it to them. However it is true that minor races are very dumb.

And if another race was destroying all their ships they may not have been able to get to yours, even if they were in range. They sometimes pick them up more quickly if you have a trade route established with them. Their pilots can come in on your freighters.

I have *never* seen a minor race use the vessels I give them. Recently, I broke up a fleet of 8 ships, put them surrounding a minor race's homeworld, gifted them all. Atleast I used up one of the Torian's move points when they had to attack the ring around the planet.

This was in 1.2, by the way.
