The watch battle viewer currently does not work no matter the settings. It's just little icons on the screen. Is there a way to make it work or is it a bug?

Could you post a debug.err so we can at least get an idea of what video card you have?

Its location is C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\debug.err

Oh boy where to begin.

1st if the game didnt have the combat viewer it has (If It was just like GalCiv1 I wouldn't have bought the game.)

2nd When you use map combat your basically using a random number generator system to resolve your battles quickly (no shield hits, no tech weapon damage, No way of telling if your tech are being effective.)

3rd how did your response help the other player? he wants to see the combat viewer at work on his system. Just coming in here saying "this sucks" does not help the player in anyway.

If you see a bug or problem post you help the person you just don't say "it sucks"

I say map combat sucks and is only good to quickly resolve planetary assaults.

I cannot agree with the VIEWER makes ANY diff in combat ....
You WIN or LOSE by wattever - either way ....
The VIEWER is just a way to WATCH combat in space ...
SO ...
I will address the OP this way :
Try any/all options to view COMBAT and ...
ENJOy the game ...

Does how you VIEW space COMBAT affect the outcome ????
That is - Main Map or BattleViewer ?????

Viewing or not viewing the battle does not affect the outcome in any way. If you do opt to view it, it is not taking place in real time; the result has been calculated as soon as the battle was initiated, and you're just getting a pretty representation of those calculations (a blow-by-blow breakdown, as it were).

I can't get the viewer to come on in the first place, that's the problem. Ships do their little fighting on the main map screen and that's it. I have no way to make a debug.err

Firstly, so long as the game runs, there will be a debug.err file created in the same location the game is installed at. But this sounds like it's just a case of incorrect settings. They should be like so (the ones I've darkened shouldn't matter):
