Am i being stupid? No pre-designed ships becoming available?

I've just purchased this game and am having one slight problem regarding the in-game pre-designed ships. As i go through the game and discover new technologies i am expecting new ships to become available for building. I've managedt to get the freigher, defender and some other little defending ship to appear but no others? So in total i can build 6 or 7 seven ships. I've researched up to medium sized hulls and many offensive / defensive technologies. Is there something fundamental i've missed. Where are all the ships? Any help is appreciated.

If you're using the Core ships, then yes, you're being stupid

There are indeed very few Core ships, but they are there. On the research screen it should tell you when the tech you are researching will help lead to a new ship design, and also what other techs are required to get it.

But you are really, really a lot better off designing your own.

Yup. Design your own ships... the first thing I do when I core ship pops up with a new technology is to click obselete and get it out of my list.

Just whack together your own ships, doesn't take long to get used to. You only need to put the functional components on, not spend 6 hours fancying it up to look like a Bird of Prey as some do

I've always designed my own but imagine games like Civilization or the original Galactic Civ. You don't have that many predesigned units available -- Warrior, Phalanx, Legion, Horsemen, Knights, Musketeers, Riflemen. Or Star Fighter, Defender, Battle Axe, Frigate, Battle Hammer, Battleship, Death Knight, Dreadnought. It's just that the GCII tech tree is broken down into bits so you can design a ship halfway between a Battle Axe and a Defender, or halfway between halfway between them.

He did say he just purchased the game as well. The first few games I played I only used the core ships. It was a lot easier to learn the interface without spending time designing my own ships.

What Core Ships are you looking for some people here don't ever see there defensive capability or that they are extremely cheap to build.. they maybe slow but some pack a strong wholup.. here are some designs available..

Battle Axe - Medium Scale Building and Plasma Weapons

Battle Hammer - Medium Scale Building and Singularity Driver

Battleship - Large Scale Building, General Life Support, Phasors, Shields

Corvette - Medium Scale Building, Harpoon, ECM

Cruiser - Advanced Hulls, Stinger Mark IV

Pheonix - Advanced Hulls, Plasma Weapons, and Superior Deflectors.

Thunder - Avanced Hulls and Mass Drivers III
