Activation Error: 12

I receive an "Activation Error: 12" message when first attempting to Play Game after installing.
The message says:

Submitting activation request...
Download: success
Activation result: 12
Error activating the product
Please check the serial number that you have entered and ensure that it is associated with the email you used. Try to activate the product again. If you are using Stardock Central you can right-click on the product and attempt to activate without reinstalling. Please include this log file when contacting [email protected].

I am installing from the CD and not from Stardock Central. I purchased this from a 3rd party and want his authorization voided and mine activated.
I have checked and rechecked the serial number and it is the correct serial number from the CD case. I have e-mailed [email protected] but all I received was an automatic response - that did not help. I may be in the help desk's que but it is taking forever.
Does anyone have a solution to this?
